Oban is a city built around a late 18th-century distillery that produces one of the finest single malt whiskeys in Scotland. This normally peaceful town is invaded during summer when tourists use it as a base to visit the Inner Hebrides islands such as Mull, Lismore and Coll, supporting its status as the Gateway to the Isles.
The horseshoe-shaped Oban Bay is sheltered by Kerrera Island with its spectacular Gylen Castle. Award-winning seafood restaurants and lively pubs line George Street and the waterfront of Corran Esplanade adjacent to the harbour.
Take a short walk up the hill to McCaig’s Tower, a structure based on the Roman Colosseum, for the finest views of Oban’s centre and the outer islands. When you get back down to sea level, stroll into and stumble out of the Oban whiskey distillery after sampling the local version of the 'water of life'.
Admire the coastal scenery as you travel a bit out of town to the 7th-century ruins of Dunollie Castle, home of the Clan MacDougall. The Firth of Lorn gives visitors a fanatstic opportunity to try some sea kayaking.
As the capital of North Argyll, Oban has a great selection of hotels, guest houses and B&Bs available on Booking.com.

Oban is a very busy sea port only accessible via lengthy journeys through the most beautiful scenic areas. I like the shops and cafes - real independent businesses with people serving in them, a welcome change from the usual identikit shopping centres in most towns. Public transport links are excellent and there are ferries constantly departing and arriving from the western isles. McCaig Tower is worth a visit for views over the town or out to the islands if the weather is clear.

Oban is a lovely town!
Oban is a lovely town!
Although it is 100 miles from our home at the bottom of Kintyre, we go there several times a year and stay over, one or two nights.
There are some excellent eating places and pubs, not least the excellent 'Oban Inn', a good old fashioned, proper pub!
Most shops are great, however, maybe less 'tacky touristy' shops would be a good idea?
Also excellent stores away from the town centre, M&S, Argos, Homebase, Tesco, Aldi and an excellent, quite new Lidl!
Oh, and excellent sea food, and fish & chips, especially at the 'George'!

It’s a great area to visit, tremendous places to eat, especially the sea food stall on the harbour, as fresh as you can get. Great shopping, sea trips, walks etc etc.

Good location and while not on the sea front, only one street back and within walking distance of everything in the centre of Oban. Good comfortable bar and they have an arrangement with a fabulous restaurant called 'Coast' where we ate and were able to inform us when our table was ready. Decor in the room was nice and bed was comfortable. Fabulous rain shower and free parking at the rear of the hotel.
The hotel is in the very centre of Oban with easy access to everything. I appreciated the opportunity to use the hotel's car park at the back. I also got upgraded to a larger room free of charge which was a nice touch. The breakfast was decent, given the price of the stay.
Had to stay in Oban for the night due to. Mechanical issue with the bike during a long distance event, booked via Booking.com got to the hotel and my booking wasn’t on the system thankfully the staff were fantastic and sorted me a room, clean and tidy if vey very warm
Lovely stay at the Columba Hotel in Oban. Lovely room with 3 windows overlooking the port area - it was lovely watching the view. Very comfy beds too and decent sized shower
Everything! Hotel and staff both amazing! Staff couldn’t have been any nicer or accommodating. Location was also perfect for walks in/out of Oban town centre.
