Anyday The Everyday Set

With The Everyday Set by Anyday, cooking entire meals in the microwave is easy and fast. We liked the tapered sides and the large, flat bottom of the dishes, which made them easy to maneuver in and out of the microwave. The silicone knob on the lid was comfortable to grip and didn’t get hot during long cooking times. We also liked the silicone gasket on the underside of the lid, which kept the lid firmly in place during cooking and when maneuvering the dish. This gasket also creates a seal, trapping most of the moisture and keeping food from drying out. In addition to the cookware’s smart design, we liked the user-friendly Anyday website, which provides recipes and cooking guidance. All the recipes we made from the site were delicious. We were especially impressed by how well the meat dishes came out; though there was no browning, they were perfectly cooked through and tender—no under- or overdone spots, which can normally be a problem during microwave cooking.

What You Need to Know

Launched in March 2021 by Stephanie Chen of the Meyer Corporation, a major cookware manufacturer, and in partnership with restaurateur David Chang, Anyday claims that you can use its dishes to cook entire meals in the microwave. We tested the cookware and were impressed; the glass dishes and lids were easy to use, and the food inside cooked evenly. We also like that the Anyday website provides not only free, delicious recipes but also solid support, allowing us to customize our experience by choosing our microwave wattage and serving size from drop-down menus.

Anyday wants to change the way we think about the microwave. The company claims that by using its cookware and recipes, home cooks can have perfectly cooked, delicious meals (think sticky Honey Mustard Chicken Wings, Sloppy Joes, Bok Choy with Peanut Sauce, and even Garlic Butter Lobster Tails), all made in the microwave with minimal effort.

The cookware is available in three colors and  in four sizes (a large deep dish, a medium deep dish, a large shallow dish, and a medium shallow dish) that can be purchased individually, in pairs (large deep and large shallow or medium deep and medium shallow), or as a complete set of four. We tested all four dishes, sold together as The Everyday Set.

Anyday dishes are made from shock-resistant borosilicate glass. The lids have a silicone knob that pops up and doubles as a vent and stainless-steel rims with silicone gaskets to ensure a tight seal. These thoughtful design elements made the dishes easy to handle and helped food cook evenly.

The dishes and lids are made of thick, frosted, shock-resistant borosilicate glass, which resists cracking when exposed to sudden shifts in temperature (e.g., taking a hot dish out of the microwave and putting it on a cold surface). Each lid has a silicone knob that pops up and doubles as a vent and a microwave-safe stainless-steel rim with a silicone gasket underneath to ensure a tight seal. The glass allows the microwave to cook the food through, and the lid captures the moisture released from the food as it cooks, preventing it from drying out.

We were impressed by the perfectly cooked chicken wings and crisp-tender vegetables made in the Anyday cookware. The lids, which trap moisture, ensured that all kinds of foods were perfectly cooked and not dried out.

Getting Cooking

We made eight Anyday recipes as well as our recipe for Microwaved Beets. (For comparison, we also cooked the microwaved beets and several of the Anyday recipes in similar-size bowls from our favorite glass mixing bowl set, the Pyrex Smart Essentials Mixing Bowl Set.)

A major perk of using the Anyday cookware set is the company’s free recipes. Each recipe was easily adjustable: Input the wattage of your microwave and the desired serving size, and the recipe automatically adjusts ingredient quantities and cooking times. Anyday also has simple, one-ingredient recipes for foods such as cooked broccoli, chicken breasts, and quinoa.

A major perk of using the Anyday cookware set is the company’s free recipes. Just input the wattage and serving size desired, and the recipe automatically adjusts ingredient quantities and cooking times.

Of the eight Anyday recipes we tried, we were impressed by the perfectly cooked chicken wings and sloppy joes, al dente pasta, crisp-tender vegetables, and succulent lobster tails. Because of the moisture trapped inside the dishes, meat came out tender and moist rather than getting browned; this result was appropriate for most of the recipes (e.g., sticky chicken wings rather than crispy fried buffalo wings). Our recipe for cooked beets also came out well in the Anyday dishes, with each beet cube cooked through.

Creamy, dreamy (homemade!) mac and cheese with al dente noodles was another easy, successful recipe we made in the Anyday dishware.

In contrast, the Pyrex-cooked food was usually a little drier, particularly the chicken wings. We think this was a result of the Pyrex bowl lids and/or the plates not fully sealing off the contents inside like the Anyday lids do. We left these lids slightly ajar after discovering that the lack of a vent caused them to puff up when fully sealed. On the Anyday lids, the venting knob allowed built-up pressure to escape, but not enough to result in dry food.

Easy Handling

The Anyday dishes and lids were easier to handle than regular bowls and lids. The dishes’ flat, wide bottoms and gently angled sides made them comfortable to grip (even when wearing bulky oven mitts), whereas the smooth-surfaced, curved Pyrex bowls were slippery and hard to get a hold on.

The Anyday dishes' textured frosted glass exteriors, wide bases, and gently angled sides made them more comfortable and secure to hold than the rigged setup we often use to cook in the microwave, a Pyrex mixing bowl with a dinner-plate lid.

We also liked the silicone gasket on the Anyday lids; it kept the lids secure when maneuvering the dishes. We had particular trouble handling the Pyrex bowl when we used a plate as a lid when making microwaved beets (as the recipe called for)—the plate slid off the bowl in the microwave. The Pyrex microwave-safe plastic lids also emitted a chemical smell during longer cooking times, which didn’t happen with the Anyday dishes.

Overall, We Were Impressed

The Anyday cookware performed well in our tests; every recipe we made in the cookware, no matter the size of the dishware, came out perfectly cooked, and the dishes were easy to handle. We continued to use the dishes even after we finished our formal testing and came away with a newfound appreciation for microwave cooking.

FAQs

Yes, the Anyday cookware performs equally well in microwaves with different wattages (they offer recipe options that work with 700- to 1,200-watt microwaves). You just need to know your microwave’s output wattage. Then, on the Anyday website, you can select the wattage of your microwave and the number of servings you are preparing, and the recipe will adjust the cooking time accordingly.

In most cases, the wattage is listed on the actual machine. Places to check include inside the door or on the steel plate on the back. The user manual should also say.

According to Anyday founder Stephanie Chen, the stainless-steel ring “holds the glass and silicone rim together tightly without the need for glue, which can wear down . . . over time and also isn't food-safe at high temperatures.” Chen also noted that the metal can help distribute the microwaves inside the dish, resulting in more evenly cooked food.

Yes, you can (sometimes) put metal in the microwave. What distinguishes microwave-safe metal from metal that will spark, or “arc” (i.e., create what looks like a bolt of lightning between the metal and the walls of the microwave), is the type of metal, its thickness, and its shape. For example, gold is highly conductive (and if it’s a thin line of gold, even more so), so putting your grandma’s vintage tea cups with thin gold filigree into the microwave would be a no go. Metal with sharp corners, such as forks, will also spark because the electricity can jump from one point to a nearby one easily, which doesn’t happen with the thick, smooth, and rounded metal of the Anyday cookware. We never had any issues with sparks flying when we used the Anyday dishes. However, if you’re unsure about using other products with metal, we recommend not putting them in the microwave.

We recommend purchasing a dish based on how many people you typically serve. If you are serving one or two people, a medium-size dish is appropriate; if you are serving three or four people, then the larger dishes might be better. When you input your desired serving size into the company’s recipes, they will tell you which size dish to use.

We also compared the Anyday large deep dish with a vintage 2.5-quart Pyroceram CorningWare dish with a glass lid. In the ’80s and ’90s, when cookbooks such as Marie T. Smith’s Microwave Cooking for One (1999) and Betty Crocker’s Microwave Cookbook (1981) were circulating, the authors often recommended using Pyroceram dishware, such as CorningWare, because it could handle extreme heat fluctuations without cracking. We used the CorningWare and Anyday dishes to cook broccoli and, while the results were the same, we found that the Anyday cookware was a little easier to handle. While the square shape of the CorningWare dish made it easy to hold, its glass lid (which didn’t have a silicone gasket) slid around.
