About the Klipsch SB 120 Sound Platform

David Brown

The foundation for great TV sound

Ever feel like you keep turning up your TV, but it never really gets that loud? That's because as TVs have gotten thinner, their speakers have gotten smaller. But if you crank up the volume on the Klipsch SB 120, you're not only going to hear it, you're going to feel it. That's because it's a 3-way powered speaker system with six drivers capable of pushing out more sound than you'll probably ever need from your TV. Not sure where you would put such a device? It's also a rock-solid platform designed to rest right underneath your TV. The reinforced cabinet can support most flat-panel TVs weighing less than 100 pounds.

Klipsch SB 120 sound platform with Bluetooth

The SB 120 sound platform can support most flat-panel TVs under 100 pounds.

Klipsch's signature sound

Klipsch has long been a standout speaker company thanks to their exclusive horn-loaded tweeters. This design is renowned for producing crystal-clear high frequencies and evenly dispersing them across a wide area. The SB 120 features two horn-loaded tweeters, along with 2 midrange drivers and two ported long-throw woofers for deep bass. What's that all mean? Dialogue will be crystal clear, sound effects more detailed and dynamic, and movie scores more dramatic. Plus, TV and movie sound will be evenly balanced throughout your room, making every seat a great one.

Add music to the mix with Bluetooth

Have a smartphone, tablet, or computer loaded with music? Stream your tunes wirelessly to the SB 120 via Bluetooth and let everyone hear what you're listening to. If you subscribe to a music service like Spotify® or SiriusXM, you can stream those songs too over Bluetooth to this powerful speaker system.

Sound complicated? Far from it

Don't think you can master connecting the SB 120 to your TV and other components? If you can handle a single cable connection, then you should have no problems. Most newer TVs have an optical digital audio output located on the rear panel. All you need to do is connect one end of the included optical cable to your TV and the other end to the SB 120. That's it. You're done. Now any sound that plays through your TV can play though this speaker system. That includes Blu-ray players as well as cable, satellite, or streaming media boxes that are connected to your TV.

Features

Soundbar Speaker Base: The Klipsch SB 120 TV soundbar base is a more compact alternative to both multiple speaker and conventional soundbar systems; designed as a single cabinet, single connection, sound solution that rests underneath your TV on a stand, shelf, dresser, or countertop.

TV Compatibility: The Klipsch SB 120 is designed for flat-panel LCD, LED-LCD, and Plasma televisions that are less than 100 lbs and feature a pedestal-base smaller than 31" wide x 11" deep. Your flat-panel TV must also be fitted with an analog (3.5mm/RCA) or optical (toslink) digital input.

3-Way Speaker Design: The SB 120 combines legendary Klipsch horn-loaded technology with separate midrange drivers and dual subwoofers for dynamic, full-range sound. TV shows, movies, and gaming all sound much more lifelike with extended dialog clarity.

  • Dual Tractrix Horn Tweeters: The SB 120 soundbar speaker base features a 0.75" aluminum dome tweeter inside a square Tractrix Horn for smoother high-end response with greater extension, enhanced imaging, and more powerful dynamics. The Tractrix Horns delivers a 90° wide and 90° high dispersion pattern for a broader sound-stage.
  • Dual Midrange Drivers: The SB 120 features two 3" poly midrange drivers with rubber surrounds for detailed, accurate midrange.
  • Dual Subwoofers: The SB 120 system features two 3" x 5" oval, long-throw woofers with rubber surrounds for dynamic, deep bass response.

3D Surround Mode: The Klipsch SB 120 features a selectable 3D Surround Mode designed to simulate the effect of a surround sound system. This effect will work at multiple listening positions in your room.

Digital + Analog Inputs: The Klipsch SB 120 is designed to quickly connect to most TVs using either a digital optical (toslink) connection or an analog (RCA) hookup. Using the digital optical connection, the built-in Dolby Digital decoder accepts sound from both the TV and any device (such as a DVD/Blu-ray player or Cable/Satellite receiver) hooked up to the TV. There is also analog RCA left/right input (and a RCA-to-Mini adapter), if your television does not offer an optical digital output.

Bluetooth Audio Streaming: Built-in Bluetooth lets you stream stored music and music apps on your Bluetooth-enabled device to the Klipsch SB 120 speaker system. You will continue use your Bluetooth-enabled device to navigate your music and view song/artist information. The speaker pairs with your Bluetooth-enabled device with a single press of a button. Once paired, the SB 120 will automatically re-connect with your device when in wireless range (up to 33').

Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the SB 120.

Remote Control: You can program the Klipsch SB 120's Volume Up/Down and Mute functions into your existing TV remote for further ease-of-operation. You also have the option of controlling all functions of the system with the included IR remote control or front-panel controls.

Auto Standby: You do not need to turn off the SB 120, just turn off your TV (or satellite/cable box) and the SB 120 will automatically go into standby mode in approximately 10 minutes.

Q
How does this compare to the Speakercraft CS3?
jonathan  Feb 20, 2014
1 answer
A
I checked with an Advisor and they stated: The Klipsch SB120 is brighter and more defined with its sound. The Speakercraft CS3 will be warmer sounding and able to play a little louder.

Q
What should I get. Bose solo or klipsch sb?

Hi Jim, I, too, looked at the Bose solo or the Klipsch SB120. I chose the Klipsch because of the larger presence (fits within .25 inches of my built in wall unit) and larger sound overall. I know Bose feels "warm" in its sound, but doesn't hit the highs and lows as good in my opinion. It's hard to tell as Bose does not publish their product info, which has always made me skeptical of their products for not doing so. Happy speaker hunting! Matt

klipsch sb is a quality product in a plain brown wrapper...unobtrusive, sounds great, simple hookup with a very ordinary afterthought for a remote. Dimensions seem appropriate for a larger T.V. The audience is very content with the Klipsch SB 120

I have both Bose and Klipsch equipment, both sound good. The advantage is with Klipsch is the larger base that can support a bigger TV! And it sounds great!

I think it depends on what size and weight your TV is. The Klipsch is rated to support up to 100lbs. I think the Bose might only be 40lbs but I could be mistaken. I just know it was much less than the Klipsch. Also, the Klipsch is much bigger so if you have a larger TV I think the wider speaker just looks better. Both sound great.

Not sure if I'm a good one to ask. I didn't even research any Bose options. I choose the Klipsch over the Polk Audio IHT 5000 because I was putting this in my mother's room at a nursing home (private room). The Polk had a separate wireless subwoofer, and I suspect it might have been better. The klipsch had a built in woofer. But the Klipsch had both a tweeter and midrange, and the Polk didn't have both. Bass isn't deep, but then I also haven't turned it to the maximum. The Samsung TV had decent speakers, but the Kllipsch is of course better. I have paired my android device to it using bluetooth with no problems. Setup was easy. TV definitely sounds better, and I've noticed detail that was obivious from just the TV speakers. Music is much better from the Klipsch than the TV. And since the TV and Blu-ray are both Samsung, When I programmed the Klipsch to use the TV remote, the remote for the Blu-ray also worked. The Klipsch is well built, and has no problems supporting the weight of the 32" TV. Happy with the decision, but then again I know nothing about the Bose.

Hey Jim, Like practically all flat screens, audio is poor and only gets worse with among various audio sources. Getting an all-in-one speaker is a no-brainer. I got the Klipsch for two main reasons: 1. The Klipsch can stream music from your iPhone, iPad, etc. via Bluetooth. The Bose Solo does not offer this feature. 2. The stand on my 40" Samsung is not a flat plate as in past models. This model has a tripod-like design with four legs. The footprint of these legs, as I recall, was either too big to fit on the deck of the Bose Solo or, would just fit and could easily slide off and then bye-bye new Samsung! The Klipsch deck easily fits significantly more TV stands than the Bose Solo. Lastly, the only reservation I have with the Klipsch is adjusting the volume through my DirecTV remote. I was able to sync volume and mute control to the DirecTV remote, however, every time I turn it up, down or mute, a message window appears right in the middle of the screen saying, "Your TV is set to use external speakers. Adjust the volume on the connected speakers directly." Well, like anyone else, I only want to use one remote. Also, this message stays up for a good five seconds. I have yet to figure out how to solve this dilemma. Bottom line, I highly recommend the Klipsch. Hope this helps!

Looked at the Bose as I have always liked Bose products, but was scared off by reviews. I also wanted to run my receiver through this base (as well as TV) and thought the Klipsch would work better - which it has! The Klipsch is worth the extra bucks (@ current Crutchfield price) so you won't be kicking yourself later because you didn't buy. Good Luck!

This is the best bang for the buck. Plus I like the fact that it can support a 100 pound TV in case I need to upgrade my TV. Check out the dimensions for this before you buy.

I have both in my apartment. Klipsch is larger to handle larger TVs. Also has Bluetooth. Have Bose sound bar. Great sound but better to hang on wall. D

I had considered the Bose solo too but the deciding factor for me was the ability of the Klipsch SB120 to support the weight of my TV. My TV weighs 83 lbs. and the Bose clearly cannot support that weight whereas the Klipsch can support up to 100 lbs. As for how each sounds, I was unable to compare the two side by side but I was able to listen to the Bose in a store display. It did not impress me as being any better sounding than the Klipsch. Of course, neither product is a substitute for a true surround sound set up but I did not want to be bothered with all the wires and speakers involved with that. For me, the sound base is an adequate compromise.

Have not heard the Bose, but am very happy with the Klipsch SB. I am impressed that it will support a decent weight on top, which allows for compact installation.

I had the same question & did many hours of research on both. If you check out the reviews online on Bose I found several problems that helped me decide on the Klipsch. 1st is the problem that the bose unit only holds tv sets that weigh 33 lbs or less. I have a 50" Vizeo that weights 40 lbs. so that was a "no brainer". Also the Bose unit did not allow for any adjustment for subwoofer--- it just had volume up & down. Quite a few reviews were not too happy with that. The Klipsch is much larger than the bose and has 2 horn loaded subwoofers built into the unit & the remote has a separate volume level adjustment dedicated strictly to the subwoofers. This makes a HUGE difference --- especially to me >>> I'm a "bass kinda guy". Watched the blueray version of Top Gun the other day, cranked the "subs" up and it was AWESOME!!! You'd never get that with the bose solo. Quick note/recommendation for when you are programing your remote: Be sure to enter your #'s etc. quickly or the unit will reset. I had to call tech support and as soon as I speeded up the programming entries it worked the 1st time. Other than that my only problem is my wife telling me to turn down the volume ---- but if that's your only problem then you should be "Good to Go". Also be sure to check your width & height dimensions to make sure there's not going to be a problem with your setup. Hope this helps.

I purchased the Klipsch SB. Very satisfied with the sound, etc. Can't compare such qualities with the Bose because I don't have one. Important buy factor for me was that sound volume on Bose must be controlled with Bose remote. Not so for the Klipsch - cable remote can be programed for that.

Thanks JLH. I was thinking and going down the same road you did. I just ordered the Klipsch. Thank you

I chose the Klipsch SB 120 over the Bose Solo for 2 main reasons: 1. The SB 120 has Bluetooth capability and the Solo does not. 2. Published reviews of the SB 120 were better than the Solo. I think 1 reviewer accused Bose of simply slapping their name on a mediocre product thinking that would be enough to make it sell. Regardless of brand, a 1-piece soundbar is no substitute for a surround sound system with separate sub-woofer. But because of my hearing loss, I was only looking for an improvement over the poor quality built-in speakers on my flat screen TV. I have been using the SB 120 for a week, and so far have been pleased.

Arrgghhhhh, thanks guys. This is difficult now. I have the Bose. I like it. Not sure if I love it. The volume thing does bug the s**t out if me. Do either of you know how the bass sounds in the Klipsch? Music sounds good on the Bose. I'm a EDM fan so I like the bass. Thoughts? And many thanks for getting back to me.

Klipsch SB 120 cause of Bluetooth capable, 6speakers, and synchronizing universal remote, auto standby, and surround sound.... cons to it, would sound better with a equalizer for music and surround sound work better if youhave speakers a round the room....

I've always thought Klipsch products superior to Bose. You can use TV or cable remotes to operate the Klipsch speaker. You do not have to depend on the Klipsch remote.
