Poetry can be a good choice when one wants to appreciate the beauty of a language or understand a culture more deeply. The Hongshan International Service Center is planning to offer an online Chinese poetry class from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 24, allowing attendees to appreciate one of the treasures of the Chinese language: Chinese poetry.
The center has organized a series of online and offline Chinese culture classes to help build an international neighborhood and create a multicultural atmosphere. With a variety of themes, the events were designed to enhance the understanding of Chinese culture as well as promote cultural exchanges between China and overseas countries. Previous events included a traditional Chinese painting class and a handicraft class.
The theme of the upcoming event is to learn Chinese poems such as "shuǐ diào gē tóu - míng yuè jǐ shí yǒu" (水调歌头·明月几时有How long will the full moon appear?). The beauty of poetry is in the flow of the words, the rhythm of each line, the heartfelt emotion of the poet, the way it makes the reader feel and the ability to be interpreted in different ways by different readers. During this event, teachers will show how to sing an ancient Chinese poem, as many ancient Chinese poems are also songs that can be sung.
Meanwhile, as the center believes that an international block means deeper cultural exchanges among nations, the event will also try to show the Chinese people's love for poetry written in other languages, including Russian poet Alexander Pushkin's "If You Find that Life Deceives You," which has inspired generations of young people in China; Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore's "Stray Birds," parts of which are included in Chinese textbooks; and Irish poet William Butler Yeats' masterpiece "When You Are Old," which has been featured in a Chinese song and become a household name.
