March 3 Meeting De-Brief

(from left) State Sen. Kristin Dassler-Alfheim, State Rep. Joy Goeben, State Rep. Nate Gustafson, State Rep. Shae Sortwell, State Rep. Paul Tittl, moderator Mike Thomas

Thanks to all who attended the Fox Valley Initiative meeting on Monday, March 3.

We were honored to have Brittany Kinser, candidate for State Superintendent of Public Instruction, speaking on education issues. She was joined by Duke Pesta of FreedomProject Academy and Laura Ackman of Moms for Liberty.

Kinser founded 95Wisconsin -- an organization committed to the position that 95 percent of students CAN read if they are taught phonics. She explained that she decided to run for State Superintendent after incumbent Jill Underly lowered standards to make it appear as if Wisconsin students are performing better than they are. Her principal goal as State Superintendent would be to restore high standards in education: "because our kids deserve that." She also noted she favors school choice and:

  • DPI should partner with parents, who are kids' first teachers.
  • DPI needs to be transparent.
  • DPI needs to be innovative.
  • DPI needs to act with common sense: biological boys belong in boys locker rooms.

After Kinser made her opening remarks, emcee Jeff Elmer moderated a question-and-answer session. Kinser was asked questions and panelists Pesta and Ackman commented on her responses. The resulting back-and-forth raised important issues! Among the topics they addressed:

  • DEI: it is NOT inclusivity -- it is racism. Kinser said DEI really isn't in DPI's purview: It's up to the local school boards. She encouraged everyone to mobile and get involved.
  • Reading and student achievement. Pesta noted his freshman college students read at a 6th grade level! Kinser said she aims to have a "dashboard" on the DPI website that will allow parents, teachers, and schools to know exactly how their students are performing in reading, writing, and math.
  • Changing the school report card: National organizations that evaluate all states' school report cards give Wisconsin's a D or F.
  • Should we give PARENTS a report card too? It might evaluate their efforts to volunteer time at school, read to their kids at home, etc.
  • Pesta noted UW-Oshkosh voted that its school of education will NOT teach teachers reading, writing, and math. Kinser said the DPI Superintendent is on the Board of Regents, and that body can identify which of the colleges are teaching their education students how to teach reading. Who uses the science of reading to teach teachers to teach readers? She agreed teachers are not coming out of  college ready for the classroom.
State Reps. Joy Goeben and Nate Gustafson
State Reps. Shae Sortwell and Paul Tittl
Laura Ackman of Moms for Liberty participated in the education panel discussion at Fox Valley Initiative on March 3, 2025.
