The general rule of thumb when choosing a skin care routine is to find something that works, and then stick with it. Consistency is everything. This is great, I’m sure, if you have consistent skin. But if your complexion has multiple personality disorder (like mine), you might find that using the exact same thing every day doesn’t really cut it. That’s not to say you should alternate between 18 different products from 18 different brands based on your mood (I can confirm doing that will give you a rash), but a little switch up here and there when your skin needs it, in my experience, will deliver the best results.

Enter Glossier’s the Supers, three serums with very clear benefits designed to be mixed and matched depending on the state of your skin/life. “You’re supposed to become your own mixologist,” Emily Weiss, the founder of the brand, explains. “If you’ve been on a pizza bender for four days and you feel like your skin is mad or you have breakouts and redness, you use Super Pure. If you want a week of glow, then do Super Glow for a week.” Think of them like exercise: “You tailor your routine to suit your goals.”

They’re also ideal if you’ve never really understood what serums are supposed to do. “Sometimes you’re left wondering ‘Why? What’s this going to do for me?'” Weiss says. “We didn’t make up ingredients and wanted to debunk any misconceptions that serums can be overwhelming or unnecessary. They’re just very potent doses of skin-fortifying stuff.”

Weiss was inspired by French-pharmacy-found ampoules of pure ingredients, like copper and zinc, a French facialist had used on her skin. “You’re supposed to drink them, like a supplement, but she’d crack them open and put them on my face as a vitamin infusion,” she says. In that same vein, each Super contains just two actives and is meant to be applied directly to clean, dry skin as a boost: Super Pure, which soothes and combats breakouts, has niacinamide and zinc; Super Glow, which brightens, has magnesium and vitamin C; and Super Bounce, which hydrates dry skin, has hyaluronic acid and vitamin B5.

The best part? It’s only $65 for all three—less than the cost of most single bottles. “Serums are important. You shouldn’t have to stress too hard about buying them and buying them again!” Weiss puts it. Yep. Couldn't have said it better.
