Our gold brush plating solution is ideal for decorative and functional applications including jewellery, electrical contacts, gold plating on plastics and much more. Gold concentration: 8 grams per litre. It plates a 24 karat layer of gold.

If you need to gold plate on a base metal such as copper, you will need to plate a barrier layer of either nickel or palladium. This solution plates a shade of gold with a slightly redder hue which approximates to between the Swiss watch industry standard of 2N and 3N.

Whether the gold plate is shiny or matt in appearance depends on the condition of the surface you’re plating on to. If the underlying surface is matt, then the plate will be matt; if shiny, then you’ll have a shiny plate.

Gold Plating Solution has been formulated to be one of the hardest wearing and fastest gold brush electroplating solutions available. This fact, coupled with its fantastic coverage, makes it our best selling product. We incorporate a preservative into the mix which gives it a very long shelf life, leaving the gold in the the solution and not at the bottom of the bottle as with some other gold plating chemicals.
Gold content: 8 grams per litre.

Surface preparation for brush plating gold and silver - a quick reference

This section includes a handy quick reference table to show you which pretreatment stages you need to go through on which metals to prepare for gold and silver plating.

Please note;

  • A lot of surfaces can be easily prepared by rubbing with MPU and buffing with a clean paper towel.
  • In the table below, where is says ’Gold Flash’, this means to plate a thin layer of gold – usually around 0.01 micron thick – using our Gold Flash solution.
  • For areas that are difficult to reach with MPU or are highly textured, electroclean and electro-activate all in one with our unique ActiClean.

Despite its name, EPNS (Electro Plated Nickel Silver) does not contain any silver, but is an alloy of copper (60%), nickel and zinc.

Monel metal is an alloy of nickel and copper, with some iron added for strength.

This table is meant as a general guide only. Please refer to individual projects for detailed guidance.

 

How to use this calculator :

1. In the first box, enter the thickness that you want to plate to in microns (thousandths of a millimetre).

2. In the second box, enter the surface area of the article in square centimetres (cm2).

3. In the third box, enter the type of swab you are using.

4. You will notice that in the fourth box, the Calibration Factor is defaulted to 1. This can usually
be left as it is. You can read more about setting the calibration factor for more accurate results
in Note 1 below.

5. Click the ‘Calculate button’.

6. Read off the volt setting and the volume of solution that you will require.

7. Next is the coulomb reading that you will need to plate to. (See Note 2 below).

8. Amp-hours are also quoted below the coulomb reading and is an optional readout on the MicroPlater.
Amp-hour reading are available for coulomb readings above 10 coulombs.

9. The weight of gold plated and the percentage of gold remaining in the solution are displayed
in the final two boxes.

Notes

  1. When plating a number of identical items, the calculator can be calibrated to give more accurate results
    but applying a calibration factor. This is calculated by dividing the calculated thickness or weight by the actual thickness or weight.
    Note that if you’re using the weight method, you will require suitably accurate scales. Calibration Factor = calculated thickness or weight/actual thickness or weight.
    For example, the calculator reads that the weight of plate should be 0.32 grams when plated to 2.5 microns. The actual weight is measured at 0.35 grams.
    The Calibration Factor is: 0.32/0.35 = 0.91
  2. Be careful not to create a short circuit as this will cause inaccurate results or may invalidate them completely.

  • We strongly advise against the use of stainless steel anodes for most of our plating processes
  • Plating rates are calculated over a sample area which is permanently covered by the swab.

Calculating the calibration Factor from the Plating Calculator readout and the actual thickness as measured by the XRF plating thickness machine;

 

Calculated thickness = 0.5 microns

Actual thickness as per XRF analysis = 0.44 microns

Calibration factor = Calculated ÷ Actual ( =0.5 ÷ 0.44 ) = 1.14

The Calibration Factor  1.14 can now be updated in the calculator and the results refreshed by clicking the ‘Calculate’ button and the updated coulomb counter reading noted.
