Body odour is your closest enemy, following you around like a shadow. Before you throw your hands up in exasperation, science has diagnosed a few strong reasons for why we stink. From diet to genetics, here are the top seven:

Don't skip those showers: You don't have to be a genius to figure out that the number one reason for smelling like shit is poor hygiene. To keep it simple: A bath a day keeps bad odour away.

What you eat: Everybody knows that spicy food is the biggest cause of bad breath. From garlic and cumin to curry and onion, these are the foods that'll make you un-kissable on date nights. But the truth is spice is responsible for a lot more than just bad breath. These foods produce sulphuric gases that can raise a stench lasting up to 24 hours.

Sweating: Some folks just sweat a lot and they can't help it. While some escape unhurt, others suffer the wrath of reek.

No stress, no stink: Stress has a lot to do with stink. Extreme stress causes the body to switch to its fight-or-flight response and increases sweating to keep the body from over-heating.

Keep it dry: Most men are guilty of exiting the shower without drying off properly? The moisture trapped in the tiny crevices and cracks are excellent breeding grounds for bacteria and fungi and it's these microscopic nesters that raise the reek.

Blame it on bad genes: Genetics is one of the biggest causes of body odour and unfortunately, there isn't much one can do. Your mom or dad or that distant grand-uncle might have passed on a disease that causes sweat glands to over-react.

Your signature stench: Believe it or not, we all smell different from one another. While the individual odour is determined by genetics, the unlucky ones get stuck with an individual odour that is stronger than the rest because of the presence of volatile organic compounds.
