1979 KISS classic joins Spotify Billions Club

KISS’ 1979 classic, “I Was Made For Loving You”, has joined Spotify’s Billions Club.

The single has passed a milestone on the streaming service.

“Thank you #KISSARMY!,” shared the band. “You streamed ‘I Was Made For Lovin' You’ over 1 billion times on Spotify!”

The lead single from “Dynasty” topped the charts in a few countries while peaking at No. 11 on the US Billboard Hot 100.

Upon its release, the 1979 album caused controversy among fans of KISS’ original rock era due to the disco-inspired single and other portions of the project; the New York group suffered through a years-long struggle to return to the charts, with its next three releases – “Unmasked”, “Music From The Elder” and “Creatures Of The Night” – only reaching US Gold status before the band removed its makeup for the 1983 album, “Lick It Up.”

KISS wrapped up a 50-year career when it performed its final concert at New York’s Madison Square Garden on December 2, 2023.

KISS sells brand name and music catalog for $300 million

KISS has sold its brand name, image, likeness, music catalog rights and more in a newly-announced deal with Swedish entertainment and music investment firm Pophouse.

Known for its role in launching the groundbreaking ABBA Voyage show in London – with plans to move forward with a similar KISS avatar show in 2027– Pophouse has acquired KISS’ artist share of the master recordings and publishing rights, as well as the band’s IP.

While financial terms of the transaction are not being disclosed, Fortune reports the landmark agreement is worth $300 million.

“Our journey with Pophouse is fueled by the desire to eternally resonate across diverse facets of global culture,” says Paul Stanley. “As we embark on this venture, we aim to weave our legacy into the tapestry of different worlds, ensuring that the KISS experience continues to captivate both our devoted fans and those yet to discover the thrill. This partnership is not just a chapter; it's an eternal symphony of rock 'n' roll immortality.”

“We have always been breaking new ground in popular culture, and this partnership will ensure that we continue to do so for years to come,”
adds bassist Gene Simmons. “Because what Pophouse is doing, is breaking rules. We already have several plans in development, where the avatar show is one, a biopic another and a KISS themed experience a third. The future could not be more exciting!”

Working closely with KISS, Pophouse will follow its unique, value-add approach of drawing upon its world-class, in-house creative and storytelling expertise to unlock new audiences and revenue streams.

Pophouse will use its proven, industry-defining playbook to create new content and experiences to enrich the KISS catalogue for fans, old and new, actively seeking to enrich and add value to the brands and artists it partners with. Inclusivity and community have always been vital to the KISS experience, and Pophouse is committed to nurture the close relationship between KISS and its devoted fans moving forward.

“KISS has sold more than 100 million records worldwide and has throughout their 50-year career continued to push the boundaries in popular culture,” states Per Sundin, CEO at Pophouse Entertainment. “The band's enigmatic personas, unparalleled band attributes, and iconic imagery have made them a cultural force and a legendary act with multigenerational appeal. We will safeguard and enrich this legacy through future global endeavors, by breathing new life into their characters and personas while also leveraging and elevating the visual world of KISS.”

As part of the partnership, Pophouse will create digital versions of KISS that will allow the band and their unique personas to live forever. The project, already underway, was previewed at the final KISS show in Madison Square Garden, New York on December 2, 2023 when, to the audience’s surprise, KISS avatars closed the night lip-syncing to the group’s cover of the 1973 Argent hit, “God Gave Rock And Roll To You”

KISS began 2023 on a break from their End Of The Road farewell tour, which began in 2019.

Paul Stanley joined fellow rockers Ozzy Osbourne, Billy Idol, Joan Jett and Gary Clark Jr. in a Super Bowl commercial for a cloud-based business management company ahead of the event’s broadcast in February.

In March, KISS announced the final series of live dates in their career during an appearance on The Howard Stern Show that also saw the group perform a number of classic tracks live in the studio.

KISS manager Doc McGhee confirmed the band will follow the success of Motley Crue by creating a new biopic about their early years, tentatively entitled “Shout It Out Loud.”

The group resumed the farewell trek with a series of South American concerts in April as The Midnight Special streamed some vintage footage from 1975.

KISS spent the summer playing across Europe and the UK and performed before more than 100,000 people as part of the pre-game entertainment at the 2023 Australian Football League Grand Final in Melbourne before launching the final series of North American shows in October.

KISS made headlines when the family of a guitar tech who died while quarantining in 2021 after contracting Covid during the band’s End of the Road World Tour launched a wrongful death lawsuit over the incident.

Just ahead of the last live performance at MSG, KISS announced plans to broadcast the concert via pay-per-view, with fans around the world watching the full and final performance by the band 50 years after they launched.

The series wrapped up with KISS announcing they will begin a new era of performances as digital avatars.

KISS announce new era as avatars

KISS announced “a new era” following their final live concert performance at New York’s Madison Square Garden on December 2.

As they wrapped up the End Of The Road farewell tour, the band members left the stage during the show’s encore before an avatar version of KISS delivered their 1991 cover of the 1973 Argent hit, "God Gave Rock And Roll To You".

"The end is only the beginning,” revealed the band in the video clip. “KISS have been immortalized and reborn as avatars to rock forever. Get exclusive access to the full story, including behind-the-scenes material and the making of the avatars, and be part of the New Era only on kissonline.com."

"What we've accomplished has been amazing, but it's not enough,” says Paul Stanley. “The band deserves to live on because the band is bigger than we are. It's exciting for us to go the next step and see KISS immortalized."

"We can be forever young and forever iconic by taking us to places we've never dreamed of before,”
added Gene Simmons. “The technology is going to make Paul jump higher than he's ever done before."

For the new KISS avatars, the band turned to ILM (Industrial Light & Magic), who are best known for their groundbreaking work on Star Wars, with ABBA Voyage producers Pophouse Entertainment producing and financing the new venture.

In a newly-release video package, the band reflect on their experiences over the years and what KISS means to them - together with the team behind A New Era, they discuss everything from the band's early years to how their legacy will live on forever with the help of technology.

Stanley and Simmons formed KISS in January of 1973 from the ashes of the pair’s previous band, Wicked Lester; the group’s original lineup featured guitarist Ace Frehley and drummer Peter Criss.

The final KISS lineup saw Tommy Thayer perform using Frehley’s spaceman makeup and stage gear while Eric Singer appeared in Criss’ cat makeup and stage persona.

KISS guitar tech’s widow files wrongful death lawsuit

The family of a KISS guitar tech who died while quarantining in 2021 after contracting Covid during the band’s End of the Road World Tour is suing for wrongful death, according to a lawsuit reviewed by Rolling Stone.

Catherine Stueber, whose husband Fran had served as guitar tech for Paul Stanley for decades, filed the suit in Los Angeles on Wednesday along with several members of her family, claiming both negligence and wrongful death.

KISS founding members Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley, their longtime manager Doc McGhee, the tour’s promoter Live Nation, and hotel chain Marriott International were all named as defendants.

“As a direct and proximate result of the dangerous condition created by Defendants,” the suit said, “Decedent suffered fatal injuries and Plaintiffs suffered damages, including, but not limited to funeral and burial expenses, the permanent deprivation of the love, companionship, affection, solace, society, comfort, assistance, services and financial contributions, and moral support of Decedent in an amount according to proof at trial.”

Reps for the band, Live Nation, and Marriott didn’t immediately respond to request for comment.

KISS announce final Australian farewell concert

KISS has announced details for what will be their final farewell tour concert in Australia.

“We are thrilled to announce one epic and monumental Australian farewell show – THE FINAL CURTAIN - exclusively at Sydney’s Accor Stadium on Saturday, October 7th!,” says the band. “The Final Curtain show was initiated via a national petition, with KISS ARMY Australia pleading for us to return to play one more show in Australia before bringing our touring career to an end with our final-ever performance at Madison Square Garden in New York City on December 2, 2023.

“You have made your voices loud enough that it was impossible for us not to hear you! We are overwhelmed by your petitions and calls for one last KISS so we are now announcing that The End Of The Road will detour one last time to Sydney for a final bombastic farewell. As unexpected as this is for us, we will make it unforgettable for all who share the night with us.”

KISS ARMY Pre-sale tickets will be available from 2:00pm (local time) Monday, May 29 and General Public tickets go on sale at 12:00pm (local time) Wednesday. May 31. KISS Ultimate & VIP packages also go on sale at the same time.

Following a recent performance at Ohio’s Sonic Temple festival, KISS will resume the End Of The Road farewell tour with a series of shows in the UK and Europe; the summer leg is set to begin in Birmingham, UK on June 5.
