Design Statement:
The site planning challenge to the architect was to position the science building to create a sense of "order" in the context of several "scattered" neighboring campus buildings.
The solution was to incorporate the surrounding buildings to create a quadrangle whereby neighboring buildings can start to "converse" with one another, much like furniture around a living room.
The Science building houses the Departments of Chemistry and Biology. They are separated by a 75 ft high by 200 ft. long atrium, connecting the quadrangle to the west boundary of the campus. The atrium features a full-length skylight with suspended artwork by glass artist James Carpenter. The science building was designed by Jim Tsang AIA, principal-in-charge at The Tsang Partnership/now BCRA.
Building Area: 154,608 SF
Construction Cost: $35.2 Million
