Either your spider gears have shifted out of position, or you are having trouble with the bearings fitting back in. My bet is the spider gears are not lined up where the rear axles can slide back in. If you center the spider gears the axles should slide back in. If you have any more questions I am here to help. Good luck, and Thanks for using Just Answer.

This is my first time ever doing a job like this. What are the spider gears?
If you can let me know how to line up the spider gears and what are they so I know I have the right ones? I am also in the process of taking out the 350 turbo transmission to put in a 700R4. Just so you have an idea of what I am doing
Is there any way of getting some help??

The spider gears are what the axles go into, so the axles can turn the wheels. Sometimes the spider gears can move out of place. Look by the ring and pinion gear at the 4 small gears that lock into each other, those are the spider gears. The spider gears have to be aligned so that the axles can slide into them. Take a close look at the spider gears, and you should be able to see where the axles fit into the spider gears. If you have any more questions I am here to help. Good luck, and Thanks for using Just Answer.

Do you know what type of rear end it has, and what year it makes a lot of difference on how the spiders look. Did you have to pull a pin out of the carrier, and then take C clips off of the inside of the axles, to make the axles release, to pull them out. This will help me to ID the rear end you have. You might have to post a picture of the gears, a good close up so that I can ID the rear end type, to help you get this figured out. There are several places on the net you pas post a photo for no charge, I have even had customers post photos here when they ran into problems. If you have any more questions I am here to help. Good luck, and Thanks for using Just Answer.

I am back on now, and will try to help. When you pull the pin, on most rear ends the spider gears can move around a bit. Because the rear end isn’t stock, and you haven’t been able to post any pictures of what you have, it is a lot harder to know exactly what you have. What you need to do is to look at the spider gears on the right and left side, and make sure they are positioned where the axle can slide into them. If they are off just a little bit then the axle wont go in. Also make sure you are not hanging up on something on the outside in the bearing area too. Almost every time I have seen this type of problem the issue has been spider gears being out of alignment. One last thing is the spider gears have to all move together. If you have any more questions I am here to help. Good luck, and Thanks for using Just Answer.

No it normally isn’t to hard to get the shims back in, but you normally have to have both axles out, and have to move the spider gears around to get the shim back in. This kind of work can be real tough if you haven’t done it before, a factory shop manual can go a long way towards helping you to understand. That and a huge does of patience, is what I have always said. If they were easy to work on everyone would be doing it. Good luck with it, and Thanks for using Just Answer.

Sure where did the shim come out from, the right-left spider, ot the top-bottom spider. Also for me to give3 you specific details I need to know which rear end you have. Earlier you said it wasn't the factory rear end. There isn't a generic one size fits all for all the different types of rear ends. Let me know the details and I will tell you what you need to do. Without knowing the specifics, I can only give you general information, about reinstalling the shim back in which I did in my last post. If you have any more questions I am here to help. Good luck, and Thanks for using Just Answer.

If it came out of a top spider, and it is a camaro or chevelle rear end, you can leave the axles in. Make sure the pin is out that holds the top and bottom spiders in. So with the pin out, hold the carrier with the big ring gear on it, and get someone to move the wheel. This should rotate the spider gears into a position where you can get the shim back on. Make sure the shim doesn't fall out of the opposite spider when you do this. Also put come grease on both sides of the shim. It will act like sort of a glue to hold the shim in place. Then rotate the tire the opposite direction, while holding the carrier with the big ring gear on it to push the spiders back into place where the pin will go back in. If you have any more questions I am here to help. Good luck, and Thanks for using Just Answer.

The piece that turns the gear where the drive shaft attaches is called a yoke. And the yoke will turn the carrier that you need too hold still. So don't turn the yoke. Hold the carrier with the big ring gear attached still, and turn the axle to rotate the spiders out so you can get the shim back on. The grease works like a charm, and helps to hold the spider shims in place while you get it all back together. If you have any more questions I am here to help. Yes after you get the spider shims back in. Push the axles all the way in from the outside, insert the C clips, then pull out on the axles, then put the big pin back in. Don't forget posi rear ends take special lube, so get the speciffic lube for a posi. If you have any more questions I am here to help. Good luck, and Thanks for using Just Answer.

I am on quite a few hours through the average day, but I am not always on line so sometimes it will take a while, I even take a day off every now and then. But back to the directions. I told you to pull out on the axles after you put the C clip back on, I didn’t say to remove the axles, big difference. Pulling out on the axles pulls the C clip up into a recess in the carrier. Only after you do this can you get the big pin back in. If you don’t pull out on the axle after putting the C clip back on there isn’t enough room to get the big pin back in. Whether you can turn the axle, and how hard it is depends on the type of posi unit you have, but if you can hold the carrier and put enough pressure ion the axle it should move the spiders. Alternatively you can use a piece of hard wood, and a hammer and carefully drive the lower spider inward, which should pivot the top spider outward. Then install the spider shim, and drive the top spider back in to align them for the installation of the large pin. If you have any more questions I am here to help. Good luck, and Thanks for using Just Answer.

By holding the carrier, don’t let it move, pressure on the axle means rotate the axle to make th spiders move where you can get the shim back in. It might help to go back and re read the posts I have made, there is a lot of info in them. You might also want to study a rear end rebuilding manual, there are several on line. If you have any more questions I am here to help. Good luck, and Thanks for using Just Answer.

OK, I will opt out. I highly recommend you get a service manual and study rear end repairs. Many professional mechanics don’t even work on rear ends internally, mostly specialist do this type of work. Good luck with it and thanks for using Just Answer.

The problem is fairly simple. If your axles are original to the differential, all you have to do is turn axle flange clockwise as you push in perhaps jiggling it as you go. If you have different axles, make sure you have the correct number of splines to match differential. If there is any damage to end of splines, take a square or three sided file and clean up the outer edges of the splines on the axles. To line up the spider gears, slightly turn differential flange.
Here are some diagrams to give you some idea of what you are working on.
Chevy positraction differential
Spider gears
Good, you want the driveshaft disconnected and the axles,c clips pin and bolt out.
Turn the differential flange until the spider gear is about at removal point. You may want to verify that both spider gears are in line to put the pin through both, then pull the pin out and rotate diff flange till the one needing the shim is close to the removal point then slip the shim in behind it and rotate it back to position.
