My son is at college in Indiana and says his 2002 Mazda Protégé LX (with about 120,000 miles on it ) is screeching in

Customer: My son is at college in Indiana and says his 2002 Mazda Protégé LX (with about 120,000 miles on it ) is screeching in the front end of the car when he starts it on cold mornings. He took it into a local mechanic but they could not replicate the sound. Our concern is that he has a bad pulley or worn belt and could get stranded when he travels. He did have a front end crash last summer but had the car restored. Is there a history of trouble like this with this model?

Hello and thank you for your question,

The usual suspect is a loose or worn Alternator bet and if they are loose they will usually only screech when there cold because the alternator is working harder to recharge the battery after the draw on if from starting. If the belts have not been replaced in the last 60,000 miles I would consider having him get them done. They can also check all the pulleys while they have them off for any signs of roughness.
