What are the top allergens?

The U.S. has identified a list of 8 top allergens, and most countries use this core list of allergens, which account of more then 90% of food allergens.  The top 8 allergens in the U.S. are:

  • Peanuts
  • Tree Nuts
  • Eggs
  • Dairy (milk)
  • Wheat
  • Soy
  • Fish
  • Crustacean Shellfish
Is gluten an allergy?
No, gluten is not an allergen. People with an inability to digest gluten have what is called Celiac Disease, which is a food intolerance and can be mild or extremely severe, depending on the person.
Are Kate’s Safe and Sweet products free from the top 8 food allergens?
Yes. All of Kate’s Safe and Sweet products are from the top 8 food allergens: peanuts, tree nuts, soy, dairy, eggs, wheat, fish, and crustacean shellfish. We are also free from the top 14 allergens, so that means also no celery, no mustard, no sesame, no sulphites, no lupin, no mollusks, and no casein.
What pantry staples do I need to make Kate’s Safe and Sweet mixes?
  • Our cake mix requires: your choice of milk, apple cider vinegar (or vinegar) and your choice of oil (we recommend canola)
  • Our frosting mix requires: your choice of (vegan) butter / shortening and your choice of milk.
  • Our brownie mix requires: your choice of oil (we recommend canola) and water.
I don’t have apple cider vinegar or vinegar, can I leave it out or use something else?
If you don’t have apple cider vinegar or vinegar you may replace with lemon juice instead. Use the same amount called for in our cake mixes. You cannot exclude one of these.
What ingredients are your sprinkles made of?
Our sprinkles are all natural and plant-based, and top 8 allergen free. Rainbow Sprinkles Ingredients: Cane sugar*, corn starch, palm oil and palm kernel oil, sunflower lecithin; colored with turmeric, annatto, beet juice, vegetable juices, and beta carotene; maltodextrin, sodium bicarbonate and carnauba wax. *not filtered with bone char. Dark Rainbow Sprinkles Ingredients: Cane sugar*, palm kernel and palm oil, corn starch, vegetable juice (beets), sunflower lecithin; colored with annatto extract, spirulina extract, turmeric, beta-carotene, paprika oleoresin; maltodextrin, carnauba wax and cellulose gum. *not filtered with bone char Christmas (red and green) Ingredients: Cane sugar*, palm kernel and palm oil, corn starch, vegetable juice, sunflower lecithin; colored with annatto extract, spirulina extract, turmeric, beta- carotene, paprika oleoresin; maltodextrin, carnauba wax and cellulose gum.  *Not filtered with bone char Red Ingredients: Cane sugar*, palm kernel & palm oil, corn starch, vegetable juice (table beets), annatto extract, sunflower lecithin, paprika oleoresin, maltodextrin, carnauba wax, cellulose gum *Not filtered with bone char Green Ingredients: Cane sugar*, palm kernel and palm oil, corn starch, turmeric,sunflower lecithin, spirulina extract, maltodextrin, carnauba wax, cellulose gum. *Not filtered with bone char
I see you offer Color Garden® food dye as an add-on option for the baking box, can you tell me more about them and their ingredients?
Color Garden® food dye is plant-based, all natural and top 8 allergen free. We currently offer both their Primary and Pastel food colorings in our store year-round.  For the holidays we also offer their Halloween and Holiday colors. We suggest you view their website and products here if you have additional questions.
Are Kate’s Safe and Sweet products vegan?
Yes. All of our products are vegan. This includes our cake and frosting mixes, brownie mix, food coloring, and sprinkles. (Our cane sugar is processed without bone char).
Are Kate’s Safe and Sweet products peanut and tree-nut free?
Yes. Kate’s Safe and Sweet is free of peanuts and tree nuts.  The production facility where Kate’s Safe and Sweet is made is peanuts and tree nut free.  Including coconut free.
Are Kate’s Safe and Sweet products wheat and gluten free?
Yes, we are both wheat free and gluten free. Our products are made without wheat or any other source of gluten, such as barley or rye or oats. We do not use any wheat or gluten ingredients in our production facilities.
Are your products dairy free?
Yes! All of our products are dairy–free, including free–from dairy sugars (lactose) and dairy proteins (casein and whey). People with lactose or casein allergies/intolerances can enjoy our products safely.
Are your products sunflower free?
Our cake, brownie, and frosting mixes contain no sunflower, sunflower oil, or sunflower lecithin.  Our sprinkles do contain sunflower lecithin.  We advise you to please check our ingredient listing on each product page.
Does your production facility contain dairy or eggs?
No. Our production facility is free from dairy and eggs.
Do Kate’s Safe and Sweet products contain sulfites?
No. Kate’s Safe and Sweet products do not contain any sulfites.
Are Kate’s Safe and Sweet products corn-free?
Kate’s Safe and Sweet products are not corn-free. Our frosting mixes and sprinkles contain cornstarch.
Do Kate’s Safe and Sweet products contain sesame seeds?
No. Kate’s Safe and Sweet products do not contain sesame seeds and are made in a sesame free facility.
Do Kate’s Safe and Sweet products contain flaxseed?
No. Kate’s Safe and Sweet products do not contain any flaxseed, and flaxseed is not needed to bake with our mixes but may be used in some of our featured recipes.
Do Kate’s Safe and Sweet products contain coconut?
No. Kate’s Safe and Sweet products do not contain any coconut or coconut oil. We are made in a coconut free facility.
Are all Kate’s Safe and Sweet products made in a dedicated nut-free facility?
Absolutely! We wouldn’t have it any other way! (Our facility is 100% nut and tree nut free too!)
What kind of milk is best to use in your mixes?
We have done testing with all different kinds of milk and we suggest you use what is safe for you and your family. If you do not have a dairy allergy you may use cows milk.
I can’t use apple cider vinegar (or vinegar) is there something else that I can use instead?
Yes! You may replace apple cider vinegar (or vinegar) with lemon extract. We have had good results with Real Lemon.
I think I might have a food allergy; how can I tell?

Are Kate’s Safe and Sweet products Non-GMO?
Yes. All Kate’s Safe and Sweet products are Non-GMO. (We’ll be working on our Non-GMO certification shortly!)
Are Kate’s Safe and Sweet products Kosher?
YES!  We are Certified Kosher through Michigan Kosher.
What is the shelf life of Kate’s Safe and Sweet mixes?
Our mixes have a best buy date stamped on them which is two years from our date of manufacturing.
What is the best way to store our baked goodies?
For best results store your cake, cupcakes, brownies on the counter or fridge in a covered container.
After baking your mixes how long are your products good for?
After our mixes are made our baked goodies are best served at room temperature day of or day after making and up to 3-5 days. We recommend storing in the refrigerator to extend shelf life. Just be sure to remove and all to come to room temperature prior to eating..

Are Kate’s Safe and Sweet packaging recyclable?
Our baking boxes are shipped in a reusable box that can be turned inside out to expose a fun colorful pattern.  We recommend using as a gift box or storage box.  Our sprinkles and mix pouches are not recyclable yet, but we are on a mission to find environmentally friendly packaging.
What’s the Kate’s Safe and Sweet Birthday Club and how do I join?

When will I receive my Kate’s Safe and Sweet order?
Please allow up to 10 days for processing, and 2-3 business days for Priority Mail shipping. We usually ship out our products once a week. United States: Any order by regular or ‘guest’ customers over $75.00 is eligible for free ground shipping.  Free ground shipping Carriers (USPS, UPS, Fed-Ex) will be selected at the discretion of Kate’s Safe and Sweet, and can take up to two weeks from date of shipment to arrive. Our $10 shipping option ships via USPS Priority Mail within the United States. Canada: We offer shipping via USPS Priority Mail International.  This is calculated at checkout.  Please note: Customer is responsible for any duty, tax, and handling fees upon arrival of shipment into Canada. Please refer to our shipping page for further information and to your email for your tracking information.
Does Kate’s Safe and Sweet sponsor or provide special coupons for events?
Yes, on occasion Kate’s Safe and Sweet will take on special events and work with organizations that support food allergy and celiac disease awareness. It is a case-by case basis so please feel free to reach out to Kate with a proposal and we would be happy to review and get back to you.
I live in Canada, where can buy your products?
Yes, we do offer shipping to Canada, please use the calculator during checkout. We ship via USPS Priority Mail International. Please note: Customer is responsible for any duty, tax, and handling fees upon arrival of shipment into Canada. Email us to discuss or if you have any questions.
Can you ship to Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands?
Yes!  We do ship to these locations.  We use USPS Priority Mail.
Do you accept returns?
