INEQUALITIES
There are two main symbols used to express an inequality:
One way to remember the symbol is to think of it as a greedy mouth. The mouth will always try to eat the biggest number.
Examples
54 > 39
17 < 25
MULTIPLES
If a number is a multiple of another number, it means that it can be made out of adding groups of the other number together.
Examples
12 is a multiple of 4 because 4 + 4 + 4 = 12 (or 4 x 3 = 12)
27 is a multiple of 9 because 9 + 9 + 9 = 27 (or 9 x 3 = 27)
17 is not a multiple of 4 because it cannot be made by adding groups of 4 together.
FACTORS
A number is a factor of another number if it divides into it with no remainder.
In other words any number will always be divisible by all of its factors.
It is the opposite of a multiple.
Examples
12 is a multiple of 4 so 4 is a factor of 12 (12 is also divisible by 4)
27 is a multiple of 9 so 9 is a factor of 27.
7 x 4 = 28 so 7 and 4 are both factors of 28 (and 28 is also divisible by both 7 and 4)
Multiples
Using riddles is a great way to get children to apply their place value and number knowledge to solve problems.
It is also a good way to get children working collaboratively and talking about the language together.
You can also get the children to choose one of the numbers in the riddle and ask each other questions.
