Chalk Painting
After getting home from silent retreat last week I mentioned I made some changes to our living space. Some of you asked what they were and if I would show them to you. So, this week, I thought I would show you would I have been up to. We are going to chalk paint the kitchen table and chairs that Tim and I picked up at a garage sale.
I mentioned last week that I have found a renewed confidence to slow down and move slowly through tasks that I would have previously felt overwhelmed and given up before I even got started. This is one of them. First, I spent some time looking at dining room tables and chairs for small spaces on pinterest so that I had an idea of what I was looking for. Then I started to look for colour schemes. I chose a neutral gray/white and a gray/blue.
I ended up getting my chalk paint at Home Depot. It was about one third of the cost to get the paint there than it was at the boutique shop in Oak Bay. I also saved money by buying my paint brushes at the dollar store. I’m sure I probably could have got better results by buying better products, but I’m pretty happy with the way my project turned out nonetheless.
One of the things that I was most inspired by from my experience of the silent retreat was sitting and having all our meals together. Even when they were in silence, there was such a sense of community. I wanted to make more space for this ritual in my daily life.
Most of the time we are pursuing our own individual pursuits. We all have our own electronic devices with headphones and time together when we can talk about our days and have connected conversations. I’m not big on news myself, but I love hearing Tim talk about current events and his take on them. I love hearing about Trinity’s day and her interaction with her friends and peers. There is a sense of bonding that comes from our time sitting down together to enjoy a meal and not only that, but also the time we spend together afterwards, cleaning up. I’m finding that my time at the dinner table with my family is the time I look forward to most all day.
The other thing I was inspired by were all the shrines set up in the shrine room. One shrine or altar in particular was the shrine set up for our teachers. Beside the shrine was a chair. This chair was placed for our teachers and our inner teacher to be present for our practice. I placed one of my chairs beside my altar and now I am happy to have a freshly painted chair there as well.
