It's been 44 years since Gene Wilder's iconic role in Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory.

But even after more than four decades, the legendary actor still had the same twinkle in his eye when he attended the US Open in New York recently.

The 82-year-old arrived at the venue holding hands with his wife Karen Boyer, who he married in 1991.

Known for wearing an elaborate top hat teamed with a purple velvet blazer, Gene went for casual threads as he prepared to watch Novak Djokovic battle Roger Federer .

The dad-of-one wore a large grey blazer and opted for comfortable slip-on shoes during the game.

Meanwhile wife Karen had pushed the boat out, wearing a floral dress featuring shades of purple and blue.

All the while Gene held on to her hand while sporting a slight smile across his face.

Gene had a long and storied movie career but is by far best known for his role as Willy Wonka.

The film adaption of Roald Dahl's classic childhood book has stood the test of time since it was released in 1971 and continues to touch each generation time and time again.

Gene's film career came to an end in 1999 but he's since continued to spread joy by releasing a number of books.
