Even a small front entryway can make a big impression. This dramatic painted rug will welcome friends and family to your home, and it’s easier to create than you might imagine.
Getting Started. To get ready for the project, you’ll need to lay out a perimeter with painter’s tape. You can experiment with sizing until you arrive at dimensions that work well for your space. You will also need to plan your geometric design to determine how many paint colors you will need and how they will be arranged.
If your floor has any gouges or deep scratches, fill them with wood putty, and sand them smooth. You’ll also want to sand the entire project area with a random-orbit sander. Don’t sand on top of the masking tape, or it will tear. Instead, cover the tape with a straightedge, and finish by sanding right up to it with a sanding block.
Using a foam roller on an extension pole, roll on two coats of the black base coat. Allow the paint to dry overnight. Then use tape to lay out a geometric design on top of the first paint coat.
After you have applied the base color, continue adding tape lines that designate the areas where the next color will go. Overlap the masking tape at each corner, and then cut diagonally with a utility knife to create clean corners.
Carefully apply paint colors inside the taped-off areas. A 3” foam brush works well for the smaller squares. Use a 9” foam roller for larger areas.
After the paint dries, it’s time to reveal the lines between the shapes. Peel up the tape at a 45-degree angle for clean removal. Then touch up imperfections with a small artist’s brush. Allow the project to cure for at least 48 hours before walking on the surface.
