2000 - Present

The 21st century opened with worldwide celebrations, followed by worldwide shock when terrorists carried out attacks on the U.S. on September 11, 2001. Nebraska Beef Goes Global

As of 2006, cattle outnumbered people in Nebraska. Nebraska led the nation in beef exports. “Mad Cow Disease” fears led to embargos, but there was no BSE in Nebraska’s beef. The industry tried niche markets, including bison. New products such as pre-marinated meats were developed. Packing houses jobs in small towns drew Hispanic migrants. Despite changes, givens remained--the time it takes to raise cattle, and the culture clash of cowboy versus farmer in different parts of the state.
