A video game is an electronic game that includes interaction with a user interface for creating visual feedback on a two-dimensional or three-dimensional video display device, such as a TV screen, a virtual reality headset, or a computer monitor. Since the 1980s, video games have become an increasingly important part of the entertainment industry, and the question of whether they are also an art form has been a subject of controversy.

Electronic systems used for video games are called platforms. Video games have been developed and released for one or more platforms and may not be available for others. Specialized platforms, such as arcade games in which the game is presented in a large package, usually coin-operated chassis, were common in video arcades in the 1980s, but their popularity declined as other more accessible platforms became available. These include special devices, such as game consoles, as well as general-purpose computers, such as a laptop, desktop computer, or portable computer devices.

The input device used for gaming the game controller varies depending on the platform. Common controllers include gamepads, joysticks, mouse device, keyboards, touch screens on mobile devices, or even the human body using a Kinect sensor. Players see the game on a display device, such as a TV or computer monitor, or sometimes in virtual reality. Often in the game there are sound effects, musical and voice lines coming from the speakers or headphones. Some games of the 2000s include tactile, vibration effects, force feedback peripherals and virtual reality headsets.

In 2010, the commercial value of the video game industry is growing. Emerging Asian markets, and in particular mobile games, are the driving force behind the growth of the industry. Since 2018, sales of video games amounted to 134.9 billion US dollars annually worldwide, and is the third largest segment in the US entertainment market, after broadcast and cable television.
