STATEMENT
As a child growing up in the midwest I remember seeing water towers dotting the landscape, greeting us as we drove from town to town. I thought they looked like alien creatures, dropped down from above, their unusual shapes molded by some cheeky other-worldly sculptor. In the midwest the classic ‘Water Spheroid’ was king, often announcing the name of the town before you arrived, or wearing a message of positivity through a simple smiley face. It wasn’t until later when I discovered the masterful photography work of Bernd and Hilla Becher, that I realized the diversity in architecture of water towers spanning the globe. I started seeing these vessels that hold our most precious natural resource as larger than life land sculptures, as industrial monuments to the way we as humans depend on, and harness nature.
In this body of work I’ve focused on a handful of these towers and the architectural elements that distinguish them. Through the softening and personification of the structures I explore our relationship to the subject matter, and their relationship to each other.
