An illuminated public sculpture spelling out ‘Toronto’ at the city’s Nathan Phillips Square, which has proven popular during the Pan Am Games, will remain in place for the rest of the year and may travel to different locations in 2016.
The 3 x 22-m (9.8 x 72.2-ft) sign sits in front of Toronto’s City Hall, next to a reflecting pool, where it serves as an iconic backdrop for the 35-day Panamania Live arts and culture festival. The 136-kg (300-lb) letters are internally illuminated with 400 m (1,312 ft) of light-emitting diodes (LEDs), which can create millions of colour combinations.
“The sign is a great way to showcase our city’s pride in a fun way during the games and beyond,” says John Tory, mayor of Toronto.
