The secondary sector involves manufacturing and is based around four types of industries: energy industries that supply energy resources, construction industries that build infrastructure, base industries that transform raw materials into semi-finished goods like steel and glass, and goods industries that use these semi-finished materials to produce consumer products like cars, clothing, and electronics. Raw materials are transformed through multiple steps, with base industries creating intermediate materials that are then used by goods industries to make finished products.
4. 1. Energy industries
They supply us with the energy that we need.
This energy can be:
- Non- renewable, such as coal, oil and gas.
- Renewable, such as water, wind and sunlight.
5. 2. Construction industries
They use raw materials like marble, sand,
limestone (to make concrete), etc. and
they build bridges, streets, pavements,
buildings, etc.
6. 3. Base industries
They transform raw materials into semi-
finished products. These semi-finished
products go to another factory and are
transformed another product.
STEEL IS AN EXAMPLE OF PRODUCT MADE IN BASE INDUSTRIES
7. 1. Iron is a raw material from mining.
3. Steel is transformed into a car in
GOODS INDUSTRIES.
2. Iron is transformed into STEEL (a
semi-finished product) in base
industries.
8. 1. Sand is a raw material.
3. Glass is transformed into windows in
GOODS INDUSTRIES.
2. Sand is transformed into glass (a
semi- finished material) in base
industries.
9. 1. Oil is a raw material from mining.
3. Plastic is transformed into a bottle in
GOODS INDUSTRIES.
2. Oil is transformed into PLASTIC (a
semi-finished product) in base
industries.
10. Goods industries
They use the materials producted in the base
industries and transform them in goods that are sold
to people, for example cars, clothing, books,
electronic devices, furniture, etc.
