2. Truman doctrine- In the beginning1946, George . F. Kennan was serving of head of the U.S in Moscow, at the end of his term, he sent a 5,000 word telegram back to the secretary of state, stating a new strategy of handling diplomatic relations with the Soviet UnionIn February 1947, President Truman addressed Congress, and used Kennan's warnings in his telegram as the basis of his new proposal which became known as the Truman Doctrine
3. What happened nextIn late 1946, Prime minister of Greece visited Washington and pleaded for Aid from the U.S, it was agreed upon and the U.S provided aid to both Greece and Turkey. This was done for political and military reasons. It was considered vital in the balance of the Americans political power in the cold war. If Greece fell to the red army, Turkey would become an untenable outpost in the middle of the communist stronghold. Similarly if that’d happen to Turkey, the situation in Greece would become very dangerous. This proved to be a major military advantage for the U.S over the soviet unionThis was the first in a series of containment moves by the U.S
4. ContainmentContainment was a policy brought in by the United States to use economic, diplomatic and military strategies to halt the spread of communismIn response to communism the U.S had to bolster the strength of other nations around the world in order to defend democracy and the open market. One method to achieve this was the formation of NATOThe ultimate objectives of containment were to prevent the expansion of Soviet power, but this came with many negative consequences. The Vietnam war, Cuban Missile Crisis and the Korean war are all examples of the negative side of containment.
