Basic questions:  Who dictates? Who chooses the text? How long should the text be? How should the voice dictating sound? Must the listener write down everything? Who corrects dictation?
Possibilities  Who dictates? Teacher, voices on a tape, student to another, from own voice in a lab Who chooses the text? Teacher, students. How long shoud the text be? A single word, a whole passage, a passage read in a continuos loop. How should the voice dictating sound? Whisper, shout, sing,  What must the listener write down? The whole text, selected bits of a text, words of a given category, paraphrase, key words, draw what is said, etc.  Who corrects dictation? Student himself, teacher, another student, no one, computer.
Why use dictation? Students are active  during  exercise Students are active  after  exercise It leads to  oral  communication activities Dictation fosters  unconscious  thinking Copes with  mixed-ability  groups Deals with  large groups Often  calms  groups Safe for  non-active teacher  (do not abuse) For English, t’s a  technically useful  exercise Gives access to interesting text
Some ideas for elementary students? Ss write down just  animals  from a list of  animals and fruits Ss catch words with  B  from any text. 4 teams: T reads a story. Each teams writes any: actions, people, time expressions, etc. then all together reconstruct story. Pair ss, one describes a picture, another draws. Your turn...

DICTATION

  • 2. Basic questions: Who dictates? Who chooses the text? How long should the text be? How should the voice dictating sound? Must the listener write down everything? Who corrects dictation?
  • 3. Possibilities Who dictates? Teacher, voices on a tape, student to another, from own voice in a lab Who chooses the text? Teacher, students. How long shoud the text be? A single word, a whole passage, a passage read in a continuos loop. How should the voice dictating sound? Whisper, shout, sing, What must the listener write down? The whole text, selected bits of a text, words of a given category, paraphrase, key words, draw what is said, etc. Who corrects dictation? Student himself, teacher, another student, no one, computer.
  • 4. Why use dictation? Students are active during exercise Students are active after exercise It leads to oral communication activities Dictation fosters unconscious thinking Copes with mixed-ability groups Deals with large groups Often calms groups Safe for non-active teacher (do not abuse) For English, t’s a technically useful exercise Gives access to interesting text
  • 5. Some ideas for elementary students? Ss write down just animals from a list of animals and fruits Ss catch words with B from any text. 4 teams: T reads a story.
