BIOSAFETYThe application of the combination of laboratory practice and procedures, laboratory facilities and safety equipment when working with potentially infectious micro-organisms
BIOSAFETY LEVELA biosafety level is the level of the biocontainment precautions required to isolate dangerous biological agents in an enclosed facilityThere are mainly 4 biosafety levels
Biosafety Level 4
Biosafety Level 4
BIOSAFETY LEVEL 4This level is required for work with dangerous and exotic agents that pose a high individual risk of :aerosol-transmitted laboratory infections,
agents which cause severe to fatal disease in humans for which vaccines or other treatments are not availableEg. Lassa fever, Ebola hemorrhagic fever, hemorrhagic diseases
CODE OF PRACTICESThe two-person rule should apply, whereby no individual ever works alone. This is particularly important if working in a Biosafety Level 4 suit facilityLaboratory protective clothing, head coverings, scrub suits, coveralls, shoe cover etcRespiratory protective equipment
CODE OF PRACTICES A complete change of clothing and shoes is required prior to entering and upon exiting the laboratoryPersonnel must be trained in emergency situations like in the event of personnel injury or illness.
