Curbs are a concrete fixture quite commonly found throughout residential areas and commercial parking lots. However, what many don’t realize is there are different types of curbs.
Traditional concrete curbs are most often labeled mountable curbs or barrier curbs. Barrier curbs are the concrete structures most often seen in straight lines. These tend to outline a parking lot and create a barrier between a vehicle and an area the vehicle does not belong. This helps prevent vehicles from driving up on sidewalks and other areas, avoiding pedestrians. Vehicles that drive over curbs tend to suffer damage to their tires and undercarriage. This helps to deter vehicles from driving over curbs. Mountable curbs are created with a slope that will allow a vehicle to drive over without fear of damage. These types of curbs are most often found at the end of driveways or in small parking lots. Should a vehicle drive over the structure, their tires and shocks will not be damaged.
Both types of curbs can have a gutter or apron attached during installation. This combination of curb and gutter is most often found along residential streets and parking lots. This helps to create a successful removal of water with the gutter without damage to the curb structure. Concrete curbs can also be created to form a ramp for pedestrians. This type of tapered curb is helpful for shopping carts, wheelchairs, walkers, and strollers.
