Back around Christmas time, I shared the Santa's Hat Shirley Temple I created for our Little Miss H. as a special Christmas drink. I came up with the idea one day when I was making Santa's Hat Christmas cocktails for my husband and myself, and didn't want our 7-year-old Miss H. to feel left out of the special drink fun. She likes to feel involved in the fun, and as a Mom, I try my best to make that happen.
But I got to thinking the other day, perhaps I should also share the basic, classic Shirley Temple drink recipe that Miss H. likes to enjoy all year-round?
I don't know about you, but a Shirley Temple sure brings back fun childhood memories. I can recall sipping on one as an extra special treat while out to dinner with the family. It made me feel all grown up to be enjoying a special "fancy" drink.
Not to mention, it just plain tasted good, too. A sentiment with which our sweet Little Miss H. agrees.
It makes her feel grown up and special to be enjoying a "fancy" drink, too. I like to put hers in fancy hurricane cocktail glasses to make them extra pretty. And whenever I do a cocktail photo shoot, she now asks, "Did you make a fancy drink for me, too?"
So sweet.
A Shirley Temple is truly easy to make.
Traditionally, it's just three simple ingredients combined over ice ... gingergale, Grenadine syrup, and maraschino cherries.
Though frequently a mix of 1/2 gingerale and 1/2 lemon-lime soda {like Sprite or 7-Up} is used instead of straight-up all gingerale. And that's how Miss H. and I like our Shirley Temples ... the 1/2-and-1/2 mix way.
Grenadine is a sweet bright red syrup made from pomegranates, and is the ingredient that gives a Shirley Temple its characteristic bright pink hue and sweet taste. You can find grenadine in a small bottle in the drink mixers section of the grocery store {or order Grenadine from Amazon}.
If you don't feel like buying grenadine or can't find it, maraschino cherry juice can be used instead in a pinch. Just pour off a little of the juice from the jar of cherries. Be aware the finished drink won't be quite as sweet, or quite as pink, though.
To make each Shirley Temple drink, just fill a tall glass with ice and pour in the soda and grenadine. Give the mixture a gentle little stir, and then top with a maraschino cherry or two ...
And that's all there is to it.
Whipping up Shirley Temple childhood memories ... or bringing them back for ourselves ... is truly simple, indeed. It's a perfectly simple way to create Valentine's Day ... or any day ... memories and sipping fun.
