★★★☆☆
Sing is a feelgood jukebox musical for children that’s built around a high-concept premise — it’s a singing contest, but with animals, like Zootopia meets The X Factor. There’s hardly any plot. Matthew McConaughey is a cuddly koala, Buster, who runs a fading theatre. He decides to stage a singing contest and Rosita the pig (Reese Witherspoon), Johnny the gorilla (Taron Egerton) and Ash the porcupine (Scarlett Johansson) enter. They sing. It’s good fun. The songs are wall to wall, and range from Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah (obviously) to Taylor Swift’s Shake it Off as well as a touching rendition of Lennon and McCartney’s Golden Slumbers and Carry That Weight. It’s all as light as vapour but quietly pleasing.
