Werner Ikelos

It's my go-to paddle when I paddle rough water and in surf conditions. The big blade doesn't slip when you crank on it, and it's super-light.

The Ikelos is one of my favorite kayak paddles. The weight might make you think it's a potato chip, but I use it for tough conditions and it has held up great.

The ferrule system is the best one in the kayak paddle market, period. It's almost like it becomes a one-piece, the lock is so positive.

The only downsides? It's a very big blade, so it'll kill your shoulders if you don't need a big blade. In that case, get a Cyprus, which is the same paddle, just smaller. Other downside is that it's spendy. That said, so are Porsches and you get what you pay for.

Background

I've had it for four years now, and it's holding up great. If you want a similar paddle wth a smaller blade, try a Cyprus.

Great buoyant large blade. Looks good and performs great.

Been using the Ikelos bent shaft for a number of years. It is an exceptional and rather large paddle, light and stiff, but with comfortable bent shaft it performs very well. Foam core construction makes for a very buoyant blade with smooth surfaces on both sides.

Paddle enters water cleanly and when rolling it does provide enough support even if not at a perfect angle. In some respect it is one of the best paddles to teach roll with. I have an older variation with protruding button and an angle sticker. Ferrule is not as tight as it was at some point but still reliable and not sloppy. Werner sent me rubber cover for the button and replacement stickers.

New paddles have internal scale and flash button, a welcome change. In addition to cleaner shaft, flash button doesn't catch on bungee when used as spare paddle. As with any gear for ocean, rinsing it in soapy water and drying will prolong its life.

Last thought is size—it is rather large plate so while it has it pluses it may be a bit too much for some smaller people. Know what you're getting.
