From Proto-Hellenic *leukós, from Proto-Indo-European *lewk- (“white; light; bright”). Cognates include Latin lūx, Sanskrit रोचते (rocate), Old Armenian լոյս (loys) and Old English lēoht (light, noun), whence English light. compare Arabic لهق.
