From Koine Greek ὅριον (hórion, “a bound, limit; frontier; region, district”) diminutive of Ancient Greek ὅρος (hóros, “boundary, limit; frontier; landmark”), from Proto-Hellenic *wórwos (whence Mycenaean Greek 𐀺𐀺 (wo-wo)), from Proto-Indo-European *werw-. Compare Latin urvō (“to trace, mark out bounds”).
