Deep Vein Thrombosis (Blood Clot In The Leg)
Deep vein thrombosis: a blood clot within a deep vein, typically in the thigh or leg. The blood clot(thrombus) can break off as an embolus and make its way to the lung, where it can cause lung problems. Abbreviated dvt. Also known as economy-class syndrome. Deep Vein thrombosis slideshow pictures.
SYMPTOMS
- Pain areas: in the calf, foot, or leg
- Also common: swelling in extremities, tenderness, or warm skin
CAUSES
Varicose veins. Superficial venous thrombosis (svt) occurs when a blood clot forms in a superficial vein near the surface of the body. While not the same as dvt (which occurs in deep veins) it can be a risk factor for dvt/pe.
