Facing the Giants (2006)
Facing the Giants (2006), an American Christian drama sports film directed by and starring Alex Kendrick, tells the story of Grant Taylor. As head football coach of the Shiloh Christian Academy Eagles for seven years, he has faced numerous challenges: no state playoffs, no winning record. And this season has started out especially rough with three consecutive losses and the loss of a key player to another school. Adding to his struggles, his home is in disrepair, his appliances are failing, and his car is unreliable. But perhaps the biggest blow for Grant is learning that he is infertile and unable to give his wife Brooke a child. In despair, Grant turns to prayer and scripture study through the night. It’s not until his former coach gives him new wisdom that things begin to turn around – a coaching philosophy that puts God first no matter what happens on the field.
Simultaneously motivating his players to give their utmost effort and reminding them of God’s guidance, the coach’s positive influence spreads throughout the school. This leads to a streak of victories for the Eagles in the regular season, securing their spot in the state playoffs. Even after a loss in their first playoff game, the Eagles are awarded a victory when their opponent is found to have used ineligible players. The team’s success continues as they advance to face the three-time defending state champion Richland Giants in the championship game. Despite falling behind 14-0, the Eagles rally and tie the game early in the second half. However, the Giants pull ahead again with another touchdown and field goal before the Eagles can score once more.
