Collin Klein joined Mike Elko’s staff as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in January 2024. Klein arrived in Aggieland after serving in the same role for his alma mater Kansas State for two seasons, also coaching the quarterbacks since 2017. As a quarterback, he finished his collegiate career as a 2012 Heisman Trophy finalist and was the 2012 Johnny Unitas Award winner.

In two seasons as the offensive coordinator, Klein took a Kansas State offense that ranked outside the top-75 nationally in 2021 to top-25 rankings in numerous categories in 2023. Total offense improved 83.8 yards per game over the two-year span averaging 362.3 yards per game in 2021 to 446.1 yards per game in 2023. Klein orchestrated one of the country’s highest scoring offenses in 2023, including a nation-leading 78.7-percent touchdown conversion rate in the red zone. His offense ranked No. 8 in third-down conversions (.494), No. 10 in scoring offense (37.8 ppg), No. 13 in rushing offense (198.7 ypg) and No. 23 in total offense (446.1 ypg), while also surpassing the 400-plus yard total in seven games, including five games of 450-plus yards.

Klein made an immediate impact in his first full season as offensive coordinator as he directed Kansas State to a Big 12 title in 2022. The Wildcats’ rushing attack benefited the most, ranking 15th in the nation with 208.3 yards per game, an improvement of 45.9 yards per game in 2021. That year he sparked an unit which ranked No. 76 in scoring offense in 2021 (27.5 ppg) to No. 36 in the country with 32.3 points per game. Despite running an offense with two quarterbacks, the duo of Adrian Martinez and Will Howard registered a school record for lowest interception percentage (1.54%). The pair combined to complete 242-of-389 passing attempts for 2,947 yards, including 21 touchdown passes and six interceptions.

Under his offense, running back Deuce Vaughn and offensive lineman finished their collegiate careers as two-time All-Americans.

Klein received his first opportunity to run the show when he served as the interim offensive coordinator for the 2021 Texas Bowl. He conducted one of the best offensive showings that season as the Wildcats produced 442 yards of total offense en route to a 42-20 win over LSU.

Serving as the quarterbacks coach, Klein mentored Skylar Thompson who was the only player in Kansas State history with 6,000 passing yards and 1,000 rushing yards in a career. Thompson was selected by the Miami Dolphins in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL Draft. In his rookie season, Thompson played in eight games, making three starts, including a start in the Wild Card Round of the AFC Playoffs.

In 2019, Klein’s first year under head coach Chris Klieman, he was able to help install a new offense as the Wildcats were one of the top offensive units in the Big 12. Thanks to Klein’s input, Kansas State led the nation in red zone offense (96.2%) and ranked 10th nationally in fewest passes intercepted (5). It marked the program’s best red zone percentage since 2001, while the five interceptions were tied for the fewest in school history in a 13-game season.

Klein began his post-collegiate journey as an assistant director of recruiting operations and defensive quality control coach at K-State in 2014 before serving as an offensive graduate assistant the following season. He secured his first coaching position at Northern Iowa as the quarterbacks coach in 2016, before returning to his alma mater in 2017.

As a starting quarterback he led the Wildcats to a 21-5 record in 2011 and 2012, which was highlighted by a No. 1 national ranking, Big 12 Championship and Fiesta Bowl berth in 2012, as well as winning the Johnny Unitas Award.

Klein earned his undergraduate degree from Kansas State in December 2011 in business financial services and controllership, later receiving his master's degree in academic advising in December 2019. Klein and his wife, Shalin, have three sons, Beric, Rhett and Trek, and one daughter, Briar.
