Images of an upcoming Lego set depicting an A80 Supra have been leaked, and the model looks really, really bad. Even more shockingly, none of the badness has to do with the fact that it’s a Fast & Furious car. Yes, sadly, instead of sticking with a faithful factory version of the beloved A80, they’ve chosen to go with the garish orange rocketeer, which is like an extra layer of disappointment on a turd sandwich.
I mean just look at this thing. It looks like a generic unlicensed video game car. They didn’t really need to bother with licensing from Toyota at all, other than for the words on the box, because there’s nothing about this that says Supra. The rear half looks more like an AE86 than an A80, and key features like the headlights seem to be the wrong orientation.
The rear view is even worse, where the C-pillars and rear panel have apparently been borrowed from the Tesla Cybertruck. Look closely at the underhood image and you’ll see that the legendary 2JZ is instead, uh, an inline-eight block with two cylinders missing?
Look, we don’t expect a Lego Mona Lisa here. But Lego has already proven that it can design reasonably decent, albeit somewhat low-res, models of real cars at a much smaller scale. Their A90 kit has less than 300 pieces and looks like a much more accurate GR Supra than this 810-piece A80. And a quick search reveals that plenty of regular fans have already built their own, much better versions of this exact car.
The Lego set is just an embarrassment on all levels, and it’s pretty hard to get more embarrassing when your car has an APR wing. The Lego set comes out in 2025 and will reportedly cost $59.99. Meanwhile, there’s also a rumor that Lego will debut a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution set in 2025. Hopefully it won’t be a Fast & Furious car, but either way we hope it’s better than this Supra.
Ew.
Turns out you can make a mkiv look worse than a mkv. Was that the challenge? If so, they succeeded it what was a tall task.
Any hope that it’s a faked leak? I mean, they can’t expect that to sell well just because it has F&F on the box…can they?
Toyota should sue for brand degradation.
Might have been due to licensing issues. Maybe Lego couldn’t get a license through Toyota directly, but was able to go through the whole FF franchise, and as such get another car in, along with Dom’s Challenger.
I know Lego has really went all out with making one-off parts for their bespoke models. I have their kickstart modern -day Technic Porsche 911 GT3RS model, and there are a lot of new pieces that don’t seem to fit other sets. I would assume Lego could have CAD’d up a few better-looking custom pieces for this Supra, but maybe this was a half effort with not much collaboration from the FF team (obviously no feedback from Toyota).
no respect for Toyota. Lego makes a lot more custom shape pieces for their Ferrari, McLaren, Lambo, etc. to get the right shape but they couldn’t be bothered here.
Final approval is usually in the hands of the licensor(?), i.e. in this case Toyota….. so blame falls squarely on Toyota for approving this monstrosity.
Someone at Toyota should’ve suggested the Scion xB would be better-suited to the Lego treatment.
Ick!
Well, after looking at the Technic kit for the Corvette…it’s also super ugly and orange. Lego is just phoning stuff in now.
LEGO makes BUILDING BLOCKS. Why does anyone buy anything they make which purports to be anything other than that? Buy bread from a bakery, meat from a butcher, etc, etc.
yep
Whats with that Penske style #12 on the front bumper?
That’s on the F&F hero car as well. All the prominent cars in that first movie apart from the Charger have a number on them somewhere.
