What to Expect With Tumescent Liposuction in Phoenix

You have likely heard of liposuction, but what exactly is tumescent liposuction and how is it different? This is a type of IN-office liposuction that is performed under local anesthesia where the doctor injects numbing into your skin and fat to remove the fat in a safe manner. It is Best for localized areas of fat such the bra roll, double chin, upper arms, lower belly, male chest, upper belly, love handles, and above the knees.

Here at Affiliated Dermatology we perform the tumescent liposuction procedure at our various dermatology offices throughout Arizona.

How is this different from liposuction done in the operating room?

This technique was created by dermatologists so localized areas of fat could be treated in the office under local anesthesia. It is NOT LIPO30. This is NOT intended to remove all of your unwanted fat all over your body. This is a safe low down time procedure that is best for patients who are relatively average weight and have trouble losing fat in certain parts of their body.

What are the risks?

Like any surgical procedure infection, scar tissue, and bleeding can occur. Infections are rare because the fluid we use helps prevent infection and this is done in a sterile fashion. Scarring can occur in the skin and on the outside. You will have tiny 2mm scars where the probe has to go to suck out the fat. These scars are usually placed in less visible areas. You may have bleeding after the procedure where fluid and blood drains from your body. This is NORMAL. We do NOT place drains into your body and rather have your body drain naturally. You may have lumps after liposuction and these go away with time and massages. You may have loose skin after surgery because the fat acts as a scaffold for your skin and removing the fat can cause loose skin if you have loose skin at baseline. We will tell you if you are better suited for a tummy tuck during your evaluation.

Realistic expectations for tumescent liposuction

This is NOT meant to reduce your weight. We usually remove 500mL to 1 liter of fat so do NOT expect weight loss after surgery. This procedure is meant to help you look and feel better in clothes as you will lose inches in the locations we are treating. This helps remove stubborn areas of fat that do not go away with exercise and diet.

Who is a good candidate for tumescent liposuction?

Non-smoker

Female that is NOT trying to get pregnant

Patients with no known bleeding history

Patients with no history of blood clots

Patients who exercise and exhibit a healthy diet

What is my downtime after tumescent liposuction?

You will have to wear compression after the procedure. The duration of compression depends on the area but for the chin its 7 days and for the belly it is 4 weeks. This is non-negotiable. You must wear the compression for 24 hours a day. You will drain blood and fluid for the first 24-48 hrs after the procedure. You can go back to work in 2 days after the procedure if you feel up to it. You cannot exercise for 3-4 weeks after the procedure.

What about massages?

You can start massages 4 days after the procedure to help remove fluid and reduce swelling and lumps.

Swelling?

Swelling lasts 4-6 weeks so you may look bloated for this time.
