Nigerian Grammy-winning singer Tems has canceled her scheduled concert in Kigali, Rwanda, citing concerns over the escalating conflict between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The decision follows growing international condemnation of Rwanda’s alleged support for the M23 rebel group, which recently seized Goma, a key city in eastern DRC.

The Kigali concert was part of Tems’ global tour in support of her critically acclaimed debut album, “Born In the Wild,” released in 2024. The tour has taken her to major cities around the world, including London, Paris, New York, Sydney, and Tokyo, where she has performed to sold-out crowds. The cancellation of the Kigali show is a significant decision, reflecting the artist’s commitment to being conscientious and responsible.

Tems, whose real name is Temilade Openiyi, announced the cancellation via X, stating she had been unaware of the ongoing crisis when promoting her show at BK Arena, initially set for March 22.

“So I recently promoted my show in Rwanda without realising that there is an ongoing conflict between Rwanda and Congo,” she wrote.

She added that she never intended to be insensitive to real-world issues, apologized for any offense caused, and expressed solidarity with those affected by the conflict.

Her announcement came as M23 leaders vowed to advance their offensive towards Kinshasa, intensifying concerns over regional stability. Meanwhile, the UK government has indicated it may review its aid to Rwanda over its involvement in the crisis.

The DRC government has long accused Rwanda of backing M23 to exploit its vast mineral resources, a claim supported by a UN report in July, which stated that Rwanda had thousands of troops in eastern DRC and maintained de facto control over M23. Rwanda has repeatedly denied these allegations.

While President Paul Kagame has not acknowledged direct military involvement, he insists the conflict will persist unless the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR), a group formed by former Hutu leaders linked to the 1994 Rwandan genocide,is eliminated.

Tems’ bold decision to cancel her concert highlights the role that artists and public figures can play in raising awareness and promoting peace. By acknowledging the gravity of the conflict and choosing not to proceed with the event, she has shown solidarity with those affected and set an example for others in the entertainment industry. Her fans have largely supported her decision, praising her for her sensitivity and understanding.
