The statue in Nettuno is believed to originate from Ipswich in England, which before the Reformation was an important shrine dedicated to Our Lady of Graces. According to one account, the image was brought to Italy by sailors, who had smuggled it onto a ship just before it was meant to be publicly burned in London by Protestant iconoclasts.
