About

Hou Yi was a mythological Chinese archer, known as the Lord Archer or Divine Archer whose prowess with a bow earned him undying fame. A half divine being who descended from heaven to aid mankind whose wife, Chang'e, is a lunar deity. He is known for his famous rescue of the world that was threatened to be burnt by the rise of ten suns. He shot down nine of the suns and so secured the survival of mankind and the earth.

His early adventures included saving the people of Yao’s kingdom from a monstrous tiger, from whose bones he carved his indestructible bow. His next adventure involved slaying a rogue dragon, from whose tendons he crafted thousands of unbreakable shafts, then affixed arrowheads and feathers to the two ends. King Yao then directed Hou Yi to go after mythical beasts that were causing trouble in his kingdom.

The Zhayu, a gigantic beast with the body of a leopard, but the head of a dragon. Zhayu was using his fiery breath to destroy crops and defoliate the countryside and since that kind of thing can make a body hungry, it would also devour any stray animals or humans who crossed its path. The well-armed Yi was more than up to the task of dispatching Zhayu. The Zaochi, a bipedal creature with teeth as sharp and strong as chisels. Zaochi was foiling the Hou Yi’s best efforts by devouring Yi’s arrows as quickly as he could fire them. Hou Yi wound up strangling Zaochi to death in hand-to-hand combat. Jiuying was a cave-dwelling monster with nine heads, and it could pop one of its heads out of any of the nine caves that served as entrances to its lair in order to seize and devour passersby. Dafeng, an enormous bird that was flying around scooping up and swallowing people by the dozen, then Fengxi, a monstrous boar who had a taste for human flesh, and finally Hsiushe, a snake with a body as thick and long as the tallest tree.

With these monsters slain Hou Yi had to fight the rebellious wind god Feng Bo. The unruly god was causing severe windstorms to destroy the homes of many of Yao’s subjects, on his own initiative and against the Divine Order. First Yi found himself facing Feng Bo’s beast Fei Lian, the wind deity of an earlier era defeated and tamed by Feng Bo. Fei Lian was a gigantic one-eyed creature with the wings and head of a sparrow, the body and horns of a deer, the tail of a serpent and the fur of a panther. Hou Yi quickly slayed the beast and went to confront Feng Bo. Their confrontation in the Qinqiu Marsh Hou YI managed to slay the errant deity with his bow and arrows. Yi transformed the slain Feng Bo into swamp gas, trapping him forever in the Qinqiu Marsh.

One day, the ten sons of the Jade Emperor transformed into ten suns, causing the earth to scorch. Having failed to order his sons to stop ruining the earth, the Jade Emperor summoned Hou Yi for help. Hou Yi first tried to reason with the suns. When that didn't work, he then pretended to shoot at them with his bow to intimidate them. When the suns again refused to heed Hou Yi's warnings, he began to shoot at them one by one. As each one fell, they turned into a 3 legged raven. He spared one of the sons so that the Earth will still have warmth. The Jade Emperor was obviously not pleased with Hou Yi's solution to save the earth: nine of his sons were dead. As punishment, the Jade Emperor banished Hou Yi and Chang'e to live as mere mortals on earth.

Seeing that Chang'e felt extremely miserable over her loss of immortality, Hou Yi decided to journey on a long, perilous quest to find the pill of immortality so that the couple could be immortals again. At the end of his quest he met the Queen Mother of the West who agreed to give him the pill, but warned him that each person would only need half the pill to become immortal.

Hou Yi brought the pill home and stored it in a case. He warned Chang'e not to open the case and then left home for a while. Chang'e became too curious: she opened up the case and found the pill just as Hou Yi was returning home. Nervous that Hou Yi would catch her discovering the contents of the case, she accidentally swallowed the entire pill. She started to float into the sky because of the overdose. Although Hou Yi wanted to shoot her down in order to prevent her from floating further, he could not bear to aim the arrow at her. Chang'e kept on floating until she landed on the moon.

Yi spent the rest of his life gazing at the moon, and he initiated the custom of offering moon cakes and assorted fruits to the moon goddess every 15th day of the eighth lunar month.

Personality

Hou Yi is an individual who won’t back down from a challenge and has triumphed through numerous challenges. He loves his wife more than anything as his wish for the Grail is to once again be with her. He doesn’t find enjoyment in battle rather he sees it as something that just must be done. Despite this he will show respect to those he does battle with. He is compatible with most Masters except those that will not take the safety of innocents into account

Abilities

Independent Action

The ability to remain independent even when rejecting the Magical Energy supply from one's Master; the ability that allows for action even in the absence of the Master. At higher ranks, it is also possible to remain for extended periods of time in this world without an established contract. It is both useful and troublesome depending on the disposition of the Servant and the rank of Independent Action. Acting in autonomy from the Master's Magical Energy supply, the Master can concentrate their own Magical Energy on large spells, or the Servant will be fine even in the case they cannot supply Magical Energy due to injury. The downside is that they can be harder to control and keep by their side, making the only true way to command them is by utilizing Command Spells. It is possible for a Servant to stay in the world for two days without a Master. However, this is the ideal value achieved by maximally conserving mana and avoiding battle and Noble Phantasm usage

Magic Resistance

Grants protection against magical effects. Differing from the Resistance effect that merely rejects Magical Energy, this ability cancels the spells altogether. Cancel spells with a chant below three verses. Even if targeted by High-Thaumaturgy and Greater Rituals, it is difficult for them to be affected

Divinity

The measure of whether one has Divine Spirit aptitude or not. At high levels, one is treated as a mixed race of a Divine Spirit, and the level declines when the Heroic Spirit's own rank as a Monster or Demonic Beast raises. It can also decrease due to one's dislike for the gods. Those who have A Rank Divinity or above have reached the Throne of Gods. It also has an effect which reduces special defensive values called "purge defense" in proportion to the Divinity's Rank. It can break through Skills such as Protection of the Faith and Enlightenment of the Sacred Fig. A half divine and half mortal archer who descended from the heavens to help humanity

Clairvoyance

A visual ability that is also called "Eagle Eye". This is generally a must-have ability of the Archer class. It is also frequently used during scouting. Simply looking from a high location is sufficient to fully survey a town and search for enemies. In addition, Clairvoyance will affect the accuracy of bows. It connotes superior visual perception and dynamic occipital capture, such as to supplement the long-range aiming of projectile weapons. At higher ranks, it is possible that the bearers of this Skill have acquired abilities such as precognition and other forms of perception beyond standard eyesight. It is a Skill furnished on the flesh. For Hou Yi, who has A Rank in this Skill, slight future sight is possible. His skill with the bow was so legendary that once an arrow left his bow it never missed its target

Eye of the Mind (False)

A natural talent to foresee/sense and avoid danger on the basis of an innate 6th sense, intuition, or prescience. The accuracy of this instinct can be augmented by experience. The ability also grants an effect of offering resistance against penalties caused by visual obstructions. Gained through many ordeals and adventures, he is capable of calm analysis of battle conditions, by which competent grasp of the status of the self and the opponent are obtainable even in the midst of danger; utilization of such to deduce the appropriate course of action that permits escape from a lethal predicament

Sun Slayer

Hou Yi’s most famous accomplishment manifesting as a Skill. This Skill gives him a conceptual advantage against those who draw power from the sun or are closely tied to it

Combat

Hou Yi is described as being an inhumanly strong, young man. He carries a large bow made from indestructible tiger bones that only he can draw, and his arrows are crafted from dragon tendons. These arrows are capable of piercing most defenses. Not only did he slay 9 suns but numerous legendary mythical beasts as well. Hou Yi is a legendary marksman who has never missed a shot. Along with his archery skills he is highly skilled in hand to hand combat

Noble Phantasm

Wo Jiao: The Fertile Scorch

Type: Anti-Fortress

Rank: A

Range: 20~100

Maximum Number of Targets: 400

The Noble Phantasm of Hou Yi, the nine arrows that shot down nine out of the ten suns that threatened humanity. When the Jade Emperor’s ten suns rose into the sky they carried massive flaming rocks and upon their death dropped them into the sea which kept the sea levels balanced. Hou Yi upon firing his arrow acts as a recreation of the shooting of the suns and the massive flaming rocks they dropped upon their deaths. These rocks known as “Wo Jiao” or “the Fertile Scorch” which landed in the sea and sea water that dashed upon them would evaporate and disappear instantly. In Chinese mythology this is the main reason why, even though all the waters of all the rivers and streams empty into the sea, the sea never overflows. Useable up to nine times he uses it by firing the arrow up into the sky and upon its return to the ground returns as a Wo Jiao that causes massive fiery destruction upon impact, enough to obliterate a mountain and cause complete utter evaporation
