☆Sam Mayfield ☆
☆─── Relationship Details ───★
☆According to Max, her biological father is still residing in California. Not much is known of their relationship in Season 2, but it is implied to have been a good one. Max remarked that she missed him while speaking to Lucus in the episode “The Spy”. ☆
☆ Sam was often known to her for his practical and casual approach, allowing her to watch age inappropriate movies, taking her to the race track, and teaching her to drive his Impala. After the divorce, Max relates he became more careless. He would often show up late to pick her up from the bus station and allowing her to go home with a few accident wounds. However, Max preferred life with him versus her mom. She even attempted to escape to LA when she was told they would be moving to Hawkins, Indiana. ☆

☆─── Relationship Details ───★
☆Susan is Max’s mother. Max seems to have a good relationship with her, though she does appear to harbor slight resentment towards her for wanting to leave her biological father behind in California. On the night of the Snow Ball, Max allowed her mother to help her with her hair. ☆

☆ Neil Hargrove ☆
☆─── Relationship Details ───★
☆Neil is Max’s step-father. Her feelings towards him directly are currently unknown. She does bear some anger towards him for moving them to Hawkins in order to get away from her biological father. ☆

☆ Billy Hargrove ☆
☆─── Relationship Details ───★
☆Max and Billy are step-siblings. They have a complicated history and difficult relationship. Billy nicknamed her “Mad Max” because of how angry she would get at him on their first meeting. Billy often treats Max in a controlling, domineering fashion, either bullying her or just ignoring her existence. As we learned in Season 3, the reason he is so abusive towards her is his anger about his mother’s departure displaced to Max. After drugging him, she uses Steve's bat with nails to threaten Billy to never bother her or her friends again, which Billy reluctantly agrees out of fear. ☆
☆ During Summer vacation, when Eleven thinks Billy may be involved with Heather Holloway’s disappearance. Max refuses to believe Billy would hurt a girl. During that time, her friends begin to think Billy has been possessed by the Mind Flayer. Max worries he is not, which shows her real concern for her step-brother for the first time. Later, when it is confirmed Billy has been possessed, Max is horrified and increasingly worried for Billy. She tries to reason with him when he corners Mike, Eleven, and her at the Starcourt Mall only to be knocked unconscious. When she and Mike regain consciousness, Max is horrified as Billy allows the Mind Flayer to kill him. She screams his name as it happens. When the Mind Flayer’s avatar dies due to the gate being closed, Max rushes to his side to try to help him. Unfortunately, he dies anyway, causing Max to cry grieving him as she is comforted by Eleven. Three months later, she continues to mourn for him while sitting in his bedroom. ☆

He also reveals the mysterious event that transpired prior to her arrival. Lucas invited her to be his partner to the Snow Ball, an offer she accepted. While at the ball, they shared a kiss. Despite this, their relationship is somewhat rocky, with Lucas admitting they had broken up and gotten back together at lest 5 times by the summer of 1985. ☆

☆ Max is tough, confident, and unafraid of speaking her mind. Her appearance, behavior, and pursuits are more typical of boys than of girls in her era. She’s a tomboy, super cool and super tough. She has the “you’ll never see me in a dress.” She doesn’t give a crap about what anyone says about her. She has a complicated history, which Season 3 is reported to get into, and is generally suspicious of those around her.
Due to her abusive relationship with her step-brother, Billy, she has grown protective of her past out of fear her brother will lash out. Max is shown to be anti-social, gloomy and often seems irritated or annoyed. She hates being called Maxine.
She initially brushed off Lucas and Dustin’s attempts at befriending her. She finally is shown to be an eager to become a member of the Party continually enduring their harsh treatment of her. Eventually she was accepted into the party. Once achieving this she was immensely loyal toward her new friends and self-identifying herself as “Zoomer” as her role in the group, including standing up to Billy to protect them.
She is a proficient skateboarder and uses it as her main form of transportation. She is also skilled in video games, in which she uses the alias "MADMAX." She even obliterates the boys’ top scores at the arcade. She has a slight interest in horror films. She has some driving experience being able to drive her brother’s car fairly well.
Her distrustful demeanor makes her skeptical. She often has a hard time believing the strange events that occur in her new town. Nevertheless, she is willing to lend a helping hand once she accepts the gravity of a situation. ☆

☆・*:.。。.:*・・*☆ Background ☆・*:.。。.:*・・*☆
☆ There is little background information known presently on Max. However, there is talk of information being put into a prequel novel giving a large amount of information about her background. Released June 4th, “Stranger Things: Runaway Max” by Brenna Yovanoff focuses on why Max came to Hawkins. While the novel provides insight into Max’s past, Season 3 will be focusing more on Max and her history as she embarks on a romance with Lucas and friendship with Eleven.
What we do know is the half-siblings ran away from abuse at home. In 1984, after her mother, Susan, remarried Neil Hargrove, the new couple moved from California to Hawkins, Indiana. Max and her step-brother, Billy, were not happy about the move. ☆
☆・*:.。。.:*・・*☆ History ☆・*:.。。.:*・・*☆
☆ Max joined the show in season two. So what history we do have comes from Season Two. Here it is: ( :warning: WARNING! :warning: SPOILERS OF SEASON TWO)
Max had beat Dustin Henderson's high score on Dig Dug at the Palace Arcade under the name "MADMAX". Later that week, Max was dropped off at Hawkins Middle School by Billy for her first day. Max was introduced to her new class by Mr. Clarke. After school, Dustin, Lucas, Mike, and Will followed and watched Max while she was skateboarding. She noticed and left a note for them that reads "Stop Spying On Me! Creeps!"
Lucas and Dustin were both interested in Max, and invited her to come trick-or-treating with them without consulting Mike. When she joined them on Halloween, Mike was upset about her presence. The next day at school, Dustin included Max in the group when he showed them a new creature he had found – a pollywog-like creature Dustin had called D'Artagnan. When the boys started to discuss that creature could be related to the Upside Down, the not being included in the group. Unbeknownst to her, Eleven had been watching them both, and used her powers to fling Max from her skateboard out of jealousy.
Max became tired of being excluded from certain information about Will until Lucas met her at the arcade. He told her everything that happened to Will and about The Demogorgon. Max did not believe Lucas' story. Later, Lucas arrived at her house to show her proof of his story.
Max and Lucas met with Dustin and Steve Harrington at the junkyard where they were hunting for D'artagnan – who Dustin now believed was an adolescent Demogorgon. However, the group encountered more than one of the creatures, and were surrounded by them until they suddenly retreated. Max now believed all of Lucas' story.
The four of them regrouped with everyone else and learned about the Mind Flayer infecting and controlling Will. While Joyce sought to free Will from the Mind Flayer's influence, and Eleven went to close the Gate at Hawkins lab, the others were left in Steve's care to keep them safe. Mike, Lucas, and Dustin wanted to head into the Upside Down -infected tunnels to burn them to cause a distraction to help the others. Steve refused to allow it.
Max's stepbrother Billy arrived at the house, looking for Max after she had sneaked out of the house. Angry his step-sister had been keeping secrets, he attacked Lucas and nearly beat Steve to death. Max, finally standing up for herself, used a spare sedative to subdue her stepbrother. Echoing her stepfather's words, she ordered Billy to leave her and her friends alone before he blacked out. Taking Billy's car, they took the unconscious Steve and drove out to the tunnels. When Steve woke up, he agreed to join them in the tunnels where they doused the tentacles and tendrils in gasoline and set them alight. By drawing away the Demodogs from the Gate, they bought Eleven more time to seal the rift.
On December 15, Max attended the Snow Ball. As her mother helped her with her hair before leaving, Max glared at Billy reminding him of her warning. At the dance, both Dustin and Lucas hoped to start a relationship with Max. Max chose Lucas and danced with and kissed him. ☆
