Role in Kirby's Adventure / Nightmare in Dream Land
Meta Knight first appears as an enemy to Kirby. Constantly sending his soldiers known as the Meta-Knights after poor Kirby. And eventually fighting Kirby himself, offering a sword for Kirby to use. When Kirby defeats Meta Knight, his mask breaks only to reveal that he looks exactly like Kirby. He covers up and flees.
Meta Knight, despite attacking Kirby, helps him multiple times. He would often show up and give Kirby Invincibility Candy.
It turns out Meta Knight was helping DeDeDe in trying to keep Nightmare away.
If you get 100% in Kirby's Nightmare in Dream Land, you unlock a special sub game called Meta Nightmare.
Meta Nightmare is the same as the regular game except you get to play as Meta Knight. Unfortunately you cannot save your progress in it so you'd have to beat it in one go.
Role in Kirby Super Star / Kirby Super Star Ultra
In Super Star and Super Star Ultra there is Meta Knight's Revenge. In MK's Revenge, Kirby must stop Meta Knight from taking over dream land. Meta Knight is mad with the lazy way the people of Dream Land are living and wants to make it so someone more responsible is in charge. So he comes off as more of a well intentioned extremist.
Kirby must fight his way through the Halberd ship and fight against Meta Knight. Meta Knight allows all of his men to evacuate the ship. And then he goes to fight Kirby. Just like the last game he was in, he offers Kirby a sword and wait for him to pick it up. Then the battle begins.
When Kirby defeats Meta Knight, his mask breaks just like before and he covers up and flees.
Super Star and Super Star Ultra once again offer the Meta Nightmare game mode, except this time you can save.
Meta Nightmare also provides a boss exclusive to Meta Knight. This boss is known as Galacta Knight. He was once the strongest warrior in the galaxy, but his power was so great that they had to seal him away.
Meta Knight gets the SuperNova to grant his wish to fight Galacta knight. And the battle commences. Eventually Meta Knight defeats him and becomes the strongest warrior in the Galaxy (next to Kirby).
Meta Knight also appears in the Samurai Kirby sub-game.
Role in the Amazing Mirror
Meta Knight plays a large role in the Amazing Mirror. We first see him enter the Mirror World after he senses danger within it. Later Kirby is attacked by a dark figure that resembles Meta Knight.
The figure splits Kirby into four Kirby's!
Kirby follows the dark figure and that's what starts his adventure!
Meta knight isn't seen again until Radish Ruins where Kirby has to fight the thing that appears to be Meta Knight.
In all of Meta Knight's previous fights he would offer Kirby a sword to fight with, but that doesn't happen this time.
He fights more aggressively and his attacks are significantly stronger.
Later when Kirby goes into the Mirror World he has to fight the Meta Knight as a boss again. But then the REAL Meta Knight appears and reveals the other to be a fraud!
This false Meta Knight is known as Dark Meta Knight. He is a copy of Meta Knights dark side. While the Real Meta a Knight had been sealed away in the Dimension Mirror.
Until his reveal, Dark Meta knight was only referred to as ???
When Kirby beats Dark Meta Knight, he literally breaks into prices like glass. Then Kirby gets sucked into a Warp Hole that leads to Dark Mind. Meta Knight who had been watching the battle the whole time, helps Kirby by throwing his sword into the Warp Hole. Kirby catches the sword and gains the Master ability!
Once Kirby destroys Dark Mind, Meta Knight Drops his sword (known as Master Sword) in the Central Circle.
This shows that the game has ended.
Role in Squeak Squad
Meta Knight does not appear until later in the game this time.
Meta Knight appears at the end of Ice Island. After Kirby defeats Daroach and reclaims the treasure chest that he thinks holds his Cake inside, Meta Knight appears out of almost nowhere and steals the chest. He runs to a place called the Secret Sea. Kirby can only get into the Secret Sea by collecting the five sacred Star Seals. Meta Knight is the confronted by Kirby as a boss.
Before the fight with Meta Knight begins. Meta Knight react ovaries the Halberd, and flies him and Kirby into the Gamble Galaxy. Kirby fights Meta Knight on the Halberd.
This time Meta Knight does not offer a sword. He also attacks non-stop and is incredibly offensive compared to his other fights.
Near the end of the game when Kirby beats Meta Knight, gets the treasure chest, and is about to enjoy some delicious cake. Meta Knight's true intentions are revealed! Because when Kirby opens the chest the cake isn't there, instead the chest contained the Dark Nebula!
Meta Knight was trying to prevent Krby from releasing the evil Dark Nebula into the world.
This is the reason Meta Knight was far more aggressive within the game. And why he did not offer Kirby a sword for a fair fight. Making sure Dark Nebula didn't get loose was more important than a fair fight, or his honor. Meta Knight was actually intending to win that time.
(Kirby must REALLY love cake if he's able to beat Meta Knight at his strongest in order to eat some!)
Role in Kirby's Return to Dream Land
In Return to Dream Land, Meta Knight is featured as a playable character. He joins Kirby, King DeDeDe, and Bandana Dee on their adventures through Dream Land and Halcandra.
He also has a fair bit of screen time in a few of the cutscenes.
Role in Planet Robobot
Ok! Confession time. I have not gotten to play Planet Robobot yet :sob: I will update this when I do!
Extras
Meta Knight appears in plenty of other games but does not play a role in the actual story, and thus I use that as my excuse to be lazy and not list them.
However Meta Knight does play a part in Super Smash Brothers Brawl and in Super Smash Brothers Wii u.
He's a playable character in both games and takes a fairly major part in Brawl's Subspace Emissary storyline.
Meta Knight is also present in the Kirby anime. Kirby Right Back at Ya / Kirby of the Stars.
