Great for littles, I would say 3+ (Maybe even some 2s)
This game is VERY simple and easy to win. Once you get any bit of distance between all three mermaids and the sea witch it’s pretty much over. Especially if you’ve also picked up some wands along the way—also very easy to do. So as an older child it can be, dare I say, a bit boring. In all the times that we’ve played since Christmas morning (many, bc despite my critique the game is a hit), we’ve only had one mermaid sent back to start and we’ve never lost. My pic is of the closest we’ve ever gotten to losing, and as you can see we still had three wands to burn. It could use a bit more challenge for kids 5+, which could certainly be added on your own. Give the sea witch the ability to move backwards, put a 1 on one of her spinner locations and a 2 on the other, play without the wands etc. However, with all that said, it is hard to find games for very small children to be able to participate in, and this game definitely fits that bill. My 3YO loves it, especially bc it’s mermaids, and I would bet even some 2YOs could catch on. We make it a bit more fun by getting really animated any time we spin a sea witch space, and we’ve even had stuffed animals join us in play. It’s a quick game so older kids can play along too even if they don’t love it. My 5yo stays interested enough for a few games but is usually eager to switch back to Dinosaur Escape-another Peaceable Kingdom game that has a bit more challenge. It involves memory, a timer, and a bit of strategy. Highly recommend that one. 3YO loves it too.A big difference I see between my 3YO playing Mermaid Kingdom and Dinosaur Escape, is that thanks to the simplicity of MK, she’s able to focus on critical thinking. She’s now got it figured out that if she spins a 2, and one of the three mermaids is two spaces away from being able to cross a bridge, she should choose to move that one. Or move mermaids away from the witch as fast as possible. We don’t have to tell her anymore, she’s deciding all on her own. As opposed to DE, because there’s more to think about and more to remember, she doesn’t always fully grasp why we should move which dinosaur for the best outcome. (Yet, of course.) Hope that makes sense. So all in all it’s a great game for littles, but I would say a more appropriate age recommendation would be 3+, maybe even 2+. With a bit of your own rules you could make it more challenging though.

      Great game that encourages teamwork!

I first saw Peaceable Kingdom's cooperative board games as a preschool teacher, and knew that I wanted to get some for my children as they grew. I chose Mermaid Kingdom for my 4 year old who loves mermaids. We have been playing with it for over a year (she's now 5), and she still enjoys it. She has also taught her 2 year old sister to play, and it's simple enough that they can play together without adult input.

Basically, the players work together to advance 3 mermaids along the board using a spinner. They have to get the mermaids to their kingdom before the sea witch (who has her own "slice" on the spinner). There are also "wands" that players can choose use if the sea witch is closing in. In terms of strategy, it's not too challenging-- it is geared for preschoolers, after all. I found it really helpful for teaching my girls how to take turns and move game pieces without the anxiety that winning or losing seems to cause them. As they get older, I imagine that they will start to use strategy and social cues to move their mermaids more intentionally (even now they talk about how the mermaids "feel" about being left behind or how happy they are to be together sharing a space. This would probably be a good opportunity to discuss friendships and feelings with them, but I haven't taken the time yet).

The game is bright and appealing, without extraneous packaging or pieces (ie, it is easy to clean up). We have had it for a year and a half in a home daycare setting and it has been relatively durable. We did lose one part of the spinner, and the company was exremely pleasant to deal with and quickly replaced the spinner.

Incidentally, although this is a cooperative game and is very fun and useful as such, it can also easily be modified into a more traditional competitive type board game for individuals or teams once your child is ready for or interested in practicing good sportsmanship. Or if grandpa just can't wrap his head around cooperative play. ;)

Fun collaborative game. Helps little kids learn to play by game rules.
    • Reviewed in the United States on June 28, 2012
We came across Peaceable Kingdom's cooperative games in a small toy store in our town, and we're hooked! The first one we bought was Hoot Owl Hoot, which we enjoy a lot too. However, Mermaid Island is by far my daughter's favorite game. The object of the game is to get all three of the mermaids to "mermaid island" before the Sea Witch gets there. To get to the island, all of the players have to cooperate rather than compete against each other. Moreover, there is the opportunity to learn how to play strategically - for example, players must decide which mermaid to move forward, or whether to use a "wand" to move the Sea Witch back one space, and so forth. It's not so complicated that children would get frustrated, but it has enough complexity for children to learn how to make the best strategic choice.

The concept of the mermaids teaming up against the Sea Witch is brilliant - as a psychologist, I'm familiar with the concept of the "supraordinate goal," which is a goal that can only be achieved if everyone teams up together. Eliot Aronson at UC Santa Cruz researched this concept years ago, and has shown repeatedly that cooperation aids in academic success as well as in prejudice reduction. It's amazing to me that this concept has been so slow to catch on, and it's great that Peaceable Kingdom has embraced that idea in their toys and games.

I also wanted to comment on the artwork in this game (and all of Peaceable Kingdom's games). I don't always pay much attention to the artwork and illustration in children's games and other products, but the artistic quality of Mermaid Island is notable. The game board and pieces are all very beautiful to look at.

This game was a hit with my 6 year old cousin. She has a knack for making every game ultra competitive (round two - the mermaids who aren’t “hers” die and/or get sent to the seaweed and only one can “win” lol) but it’s good to see her using her imagination to make new rules. Haha Game pieces are the usual high quality from Peacable Kingdom. This is the fourth game I’ve bought from this company and they’ve all been great for the 3-6 year old range. Her fave is still Fish Stix, though!

This game was given to a four year old who loves mermaids. It was colourful and easy to understand and had an added bit of excitement when the mermaids were near to and could be captured by the sea witch. The Board and the counters are made of sturdy cardboard, very good for use by this age group.
