Review
-Dorie Greenspan
If you swoon to chewy, gooey cookies with a divinely inspired ratio of rich, buttery cookie to melted chocolate, well, we assume by now you’ve stopped reading this note and skipped to the recipe. If not, just wait. You’ll see.
-Leite’s Culinaria
As soon as you crack the book open, you’ll quickly see that this is no ordinary newlywed-targeted cookbook. It isn’t trying to teach you how to just barely hold things together in the kitchen.Instead, it aims to inspire you to bring the love of your relationship and to translate it into the food you prepare together. While none of the recipes are difficult by any means, they’re all dishes that you’d be proud to put on your table, whether that table belongs to a newlywed couple or not.
- Huffington Post
With recipes catered towards modern couples looking to spend quality time together in the kitchen, it has me hyperventilating with gorgeous photos and the tastiest looking recipes. This now tops my list as the go-to gift for newly engaged friends.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 29, 2017This book is simply adorable. I found it for a a bridal shower after they registered for a cookbook stand. I couldn't just give them a stand without a cookbook, so what a perfect gift this was! All the ladies thought it was so cute and wanted to know where I got it. It's super trendy with great pictures and recipes inside. It teaches the newlyweds how to find the best ingredients, prep and of course how to cook. The beginning of the book provides recipes for cooking for 2, then how to cook for a small group and finally entertain a large party. What a great find, and I will consider purchasing it for another young couple in the future. I stuck some of my own recipes in there on handwritten cards and added a nice message to the inside cover. I think it will make a great keepsake for the newlyweds!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 3, 2016I bought this book 2 years ago right after my wedding. I rarely use to cook; I was a full-time grad student and my kitchen was stocked with appliances from Goodwill. But after my wedding shower, where I practically received an entirely new kitchen, I wanted a great cookbook to test out all my fun new appliances. This book quickly became my version of "Julia and Julia"; I made it my goal to try as many recipes as I could in our first year of marriage. My husband and I recently moved out of our first apartment, but every time I open this cookbook I get a warm sense of nostalgia. It reminds me of how excited I was to try a new recipe and cook with my husband in our first home.
What is to love: Great introduction; beautiful pictures; easy recipes.
Here are the recipes we have tried so far:
Oatmeal yogurt pancakes-strawberries or raspberries also make a great crush.
Rise and Shine muffins-I freeze these and grab one when heading to work. They unthaw by the time I get there (~1hour). 2% greek yogurt on these is a must! I calculated them to be: 17 muffins/batch; each muffin=242 calories, 13.3g fat, 29.3 carbs, 3.5g protein, and 3g fiber (Add in ground flax seed to give them more fiber).
Oatmeal scones- SO GOOD.
Golden Zucchini bread
Overnight egg and cheese strata-My husband had me make this for him 2 weekends in a row. It was that good. We used smoked fontina cheese and fresh multigrain oat bread (Mariano's deli section)
Open-face egg sandwiches-I make this with an over easy egg, dill mayo, and arugula on Mariano's multigrain bread or an english muffin. The paprika adds the perfect touch of flavor.
Man Sandwich
Fried rice-Let the rice get brown and crispy.
Linguine with sausage and easy egg sauce-One of our favorite easy dinner recipes; I love the hint of lemon.
Double-dip roast chicken
Homemade Gnocchi with summer beans-Loved this except for the tarragon leaves. I'm not a fan of licorice.
SWIRLS OF SPAGHETTI with sweet corn and mushrooms: FAVORITE. My Italian father loves this dish. Baby bellas and shitake mushrooms work great too.
Big-flavor short ribs-Made it for Valentine's day. It was the perfect date night meal.
Don't You Dare mashed potatoes-Use 2% greek yogurt!
Marinated Olives-Trader Joe's picholine olives are perfect for this.
Warm cherries with pistachio ice cream-invest in a high quality pistachio ice cream.
Berries and Cream Biscuits- serve with vanilla bean ice cream and lots of whipped cream.
BITTER SWEET CHOCOLATE TART- STAPLE RECIPE. In my family, everyone has a signature dish they are asked to bring to family parties: Auntie Di's cheese ball, Aunt Chris's sugar cookies, and now, Jill's chocolate tart. I use ghirardelli bittersweet dark chocolate bars and SEA SALT. Lots of SEA SALT after it cools and top with raspberries.
Rhubarb upside down cake- This is super sweet and delicious, but lots of sugar. It's perfect to make once a year when rhubarb is in season.
Better than boxed chocolate cake-OMG. Just make it. You'll see.
Deep dark secret cookies
Thousand-layer chocolate chip cookies: They remind me of the large flat cookies you can buy in the bakery section. They are perfect for ice cream sandwiches.
Scratch Sangria
Venezuelan chocolate shake-We add crushed oreos.
These are also good, but I already had staple versions of these recipes:
Make ahead lasagna-The Italian in me prefers ricotta, but cottage cheese was a good substitute. I also have the Atlas pasta maker. If you love cooking, I highly recommend investing in this. Fresh lasagna noodles are divine (Avoid the Kitchenaid pasta maker. It broke my first mixmaster and I had to return book of them).
Mac cheese-In our house, this is a whatever-cheese-is-in-the-fridge recipe. One of my favorite combos is gouda, monetary jack, and cheddar. Top with buttered bread crumbs or panko crumbs.
French onion soup-If you only have chicken broth this is good, but I prefer a mix of chicken and beef broth. I also caramelize onions in the oven.
My girl's brownies-Good, but I like gooey fudge brownies.
Now that I've listed what I've made, I realized how much I haven't made! Looking forward to trying other recipes in this book, as well as recipes from Sarah's Feast cookbook (which I recently purchased).

- Reviewed in the United States on November 2, 2015I purchased this book for my bride shortly after we got engaged. We decided to use it as an "edible guestbook" and asked guests at our wedding to sign a bookmark and then mark a recipe. By our first anniversary, we plan to have made everyone's selection.
Looking through the book, you can't help but notice the beautiful pictures. As noted in some other reviews, the writing is a little gushy, but it's for newlyweds. It's supposed to be.
These recipes are simple even for novices. Don't expect the flavors to be anything profound with this, however. Most of these recipes are for beginners and the recipes are more starting points than finished, deep-flavored dishes. Use this to get comfortable in the kitchen and then adjust the recipes to your tastes. Overall, it is a great book for new couples.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book for newly-weds and beyond!
I don't usually do reviews, but I felt that this was one book I just had to rave about. I originally purchased this book for a friend as a wedding gift, but after flipping through it I had to go online and buy myself a copy. The Newlywed Cookbook is, to begin with, a beautiful book. The pictures are gorgeous, and it's laid out well and easy to follow. The book gives a lovely introduction about ingredients and stocking your pantry, which is always nice for anyone new to cooking.
The recipes themselves are excellent - I have made many recipes from this book and they have all been a hit. I wouldn't recommend this for the advanced cook, as a lot of these are simpler recipes that most professional chefs wouldn't need to look at to make. But even an advanced cook can benefit from some fresh ideas and flavour combinations. I would say the recipes are geared towards amateur to intermediate cooks (there's nothing that stands out as fussy or too technical as far as the instructions go), or anyone that is looking to add a bit of variety to their cooking. I'm pretty good in the kitchen, but I'm always looking for some new recipes for weekday dinners. This book has definitely added several great recipes to my go-to repertoire, and I find myself reaching for this book every Sunday when my husband and I plan our meals for the week ahead.
I also like that the recipes all use ingredients that are simple and wholesome; for someone who doesn't have the patience (or the budget) to buy tons of exotic ingredients to use one time this is a definite bonus. Sarah's writing is also lovely to read. Not only is this a great collection of recipes, but Sarah gives the happy couple adorable stories and tidbits about marriage to read together as they cook.
All in all, the Newlywed Cookbook is a wonderful book. This makes a lovely wedding gift, but is also something any couple should buy for themselves if they enjoy cooking or would like to start (or any single person! Just keep in mind Sarah adds a lot of marital anecdotes). The recipes are simple and comforting, the writing is heartwarming, and the book itself is beautiful to look through. I couldn't be happier with this purchase.
