Dracula's Midnight Snacks Paperback – 14 Aug. 2013

5.0 5.0 out of 5 stars 4 ratings

Vampires tempt and terrify and the stories contained in 'Dracula's Midnight Snacks' warn about horror but promise wicked delight. Horror expert, David Saunderson of 'Spooky Isles', invited vampire fans to submit stories for consideration. As well as tentative young Argentinean gentleman heroes, we have porn stars and plastic surgeons in Los Angeles, cowboys and Comanche raiders, a vampire on disability benefit, a defiant feminist, black and white silent cinema, Victorian professional wrestling, an alienated sixties rock and roller and a nightmarish New York that almost overpowers our favourite anti-hero. 'Dracula's Midnight Snacks' is half of the two-part follow up to 'Frankenstein Galvanized', published last year by Red Rattle Books. 'Dracula's Midnight Snacks' accompanies 'Telegraph For Garlic' which contains academic analysis of the novel, 'Dracula', by Bram Stoker.

This is a really entertaining read. It contains 14 stories that are very different. I had my favourites but felt that all took the vampire genre in new directions. The selection carefully avoids the wish fulfilment of Buffy and Twilight. Instead, these are dark wry tales, often with a surprise twist, always thought provoking. Conceptual and different the stories should appeal to fans of classy horror fiction.

A great bedtime read, although not to your children. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this collection over several nights as each story is wholly engrossing, original and thought provoking.

From the problem of society dealing with vamprism in the near future, to Lucy recounting how Bram Stoker had embellished the truth to one, two, three, or perhaps just the one vampire recounting his time at the beach we are pulled into the tales.

Several of the stories could be fleshed out to novels in their own right as they tantalise the reader with suggestions. Yet, perhaps it is a good thing that each is relatively short as it leaves one hungry for me; you find your mind filling in the what next and what if.

Recommended for all who want something fresh, juicy and different.

Not my usual choice in terms of subject matter but I really enjoyed this selection of macabre stories. Lots of clever twists and turns, taking you down thought provoking and , let's be honest, downright disturbing paths! Highly recommended!

A well written collection of Vampire stories to either read in one sitting, as I did, or dip into with a bedtime snack. The tales are imaginative, entertaining, scary and invite the reader to challenge their own perceptions of this genre.
    Well recommended.
