Editorial Reviews
Review
"Wiley combines the latest research and his own years of trusted know-how to provide educators with a timely trove of high impact tools they can readily use to deliver world-class phonics instruction. A Fresh Look at Phonics is sure to be another must-have, well-worn classic."
-- JANIEL WAGSTAFF
"I devoured this book! Who would have thought that a book on phonics would be a page-turner? It’s quick, practical, and teacher friendly and yet comprehensive enough to be a refresher course for experienced teachers and the needed foundation for teachers new to teaching beginning readers. I can’t wait to share this with teachers with whom I work in professional development―they are going to love the clear links to reading, writing, and spelling. My favorite feature? The broad scope and sequence that pairs with guided reading instruction and provides links back to phonics lessons." -- JUDY LYNCH
"Wiley Blevins’ fresh take on phonics is a must-read for anyone looking to improve phonics instruction. He boils phonics down into critical ingredients and supports teachers in the ever-important process of reflection. The book gives professional learning communities the tools needed to turn common instructional failures into effective, timeless practices." -- CAROLYN BANUELOS, DANIELLE JAMES, AND ELISE LUND

- Reviewed in the United States on July 24, 2022This book is not only an amazing read but full of valuable resources (ideas) to take back into your classroom!!! I have been studying the SoR for a few years so many things in this book I already knew. BUT, what makes it amazing is how it extends on basic knowledge and gives next steps forward. The book is broken into parts so you don’t have to read from front to back if you don’t want to. It also has a section this is all about “where your phonics program fails”. Every part of this book gave me useful tools to use to build upon what I already know. If you know very little, you can use this book to learn to do better, then review on how to build upon what you know to do even more. I can’t recommend this book enough!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 7, 2025A great book for teachers or homeschooling parents looking for ideas to support phonics instruction. I have had success with this as an intervention teacher and as an academic coach running PLC’s.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 16, 2022The author promotes another of his texts within this text, which sells for over $130. Copyright date of 2017, so 2 of 4 apps listed in Chapter 1 are no longer available. I agree with his methodology, yet find his own self-promotion to be shameless. Text is well-written and is not a difficult read. Outlines steps that will be easy to incorporate into my small group classroom. I must say that I do wish there was a more current edition of this book with an updated listing of currently available apps. In my school, we are encouraged to find ways to incorporate technology in the classroom, and the use of the apps with younger students to reinforce phonemic awareness and phonics, along with practicing blending and segmenting words in an engaging manner would be helpful. Perhaps the author could develop such an app.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2024Book is in excellent condition just as described! Arrived much sooner than expected. Very pleased. Thank you!

- Reviewed in the United States on January 11, 2021As a literacy coach and reading specialist, I found this book to be a great resource for teachers that lack content knowledge and/or need simple but effective instructional moves. My teachers love the simplicity.

5.0 out of 5 stars Practical and Easy to Implement
This is an easy-to-read book that presents info and research on the best ways research shows to implement a phonics program and goes over the mistakes that many well-intentioned teachers can make.
This book provided a clear guideline on how to systematically present phonics instruction and provides activities and suggestions that are quick and easy for teachers to start doing right away.
The book is NOT a phonics curriculum but instead provides a framework for how to best deliver your curriculum. It discusses the importance of a solid scope and sequence, different research-based ways to teach blending, the value of dictation and follow-up word awareness exercises, decodable texts, ways to teach high-frequency words that are not memorization-based, and how to bring in and read connected texts. In addition, the book covers 10 common areas of phonics instructions 'failure' and how to avoid them.
Lots of practical suggestions that can be implemented right away: daily fluency work, phonemic awareness activities, suggested scope and sequence, blending lines, word building, word ladders, dictation exercises...
Evidence-based activities and suggestions. Great for anybody on the Science of Reading journey.
