No bad smell on the plastic of the nuts and bolts. Although there are some excess plastic inside the bolts, something you can quickly remedy by scraping it off with an x-acto knife or cutter.The bolts easily screws into the nuts (given that you match it with the correct shape) which is a plus because we all know how kids easily gets frustrated. XDYou can mix and match different bolts to different nuts by color (red triangle with pink triangle nut, etc.) but not by shape. It would've been nice if we can combine different shape bolts with different shape nut too. (ex. triangle bolts with square nuts) that would be a whole new combination of extension activity.All the bits and pieces fit in a plastic pouch with a zipper (see images) and comes with an activity booklet with a few ideas you can start with (colors, pattern matching, etc).     I bought these more for myself than for the toddler to play with. I wanted a safe bolt to hold things together that the toddler might try to take apart. Currently I am using these to connect plastic crates that make up part of a baby jail that is used by both a baby and a toddler. I was also able to connect part of a baby gate to a crate using these bolts. I connected some to a baby gate giving the baby something to grip when she was learning to stand up. When the toddler got one of these bolts disconnected I did not have to worry about the baby choking on it.
