- White edges - Everyone familiar with singing Gregorian Chant knows about the big book called the Liber Usualis. It has been the standard book for chant since around 1904 when it first came out. It contains almost everything needed to sing the Divine Office as well as the daily and Sunday Masses. But what about the average traditional choirs in churches, chapels, & schools? Enter the Liber Brevior. In response to the demand of some for a book that would include the ordinary sung portions of the Mass (Kyrie, etc.) as well as the daily changing parts (the propers), the Desclée publishing house in Belgium & the Gregorian Institute of America in 1954 came out with the Liber Brevior to meet the needs of those who wished to sing Gregorian Chant, but did not need those parts pertaining to the Divine Office. We at PCP have reprinted this book to the exact specifications of the original. As a matter of fact, even the two ribbons are the same color as the original edition. The size, cover texture & white edges all match the original to such a degree that it would be hard to tell the difference between an original Liber Brevior & our reprinted version. We included a supplement with 5 Masses that were not in the 1954 edition: St. Joseph the Worker, the Queenship of Mary, St. Pius X, the North American Martyrs & Our Lady of Guadalupe. A supplement to the Feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary is included for those who want to use it as a votive Mass during Paschal time. The moveable feast chart is updated to the year 2041. We tried to correct all the errors of note to word correspondence of the original edition. In the back section of the book there is another set of Graduals, Alleluias & Tracts in a simpler Gregorian Chant tone arrangement of the same music. Teachers will love this book for it does away with having to photocopy pages for students; each student can have his or her own copy. 7.5” x 4.87” x .87 " The red-edged edition of the same book can be located at B0B8VKGSTW

I direct a schola which has been singing High Masses on Sundays and Feasts for almost five years, and we have tried all kinds of things to supply our members with clean, readable copies of the Propers. The Liber Usualis is too big, and contains several hundred page of material for the Divine Office, which we do not sing. We've been copying pages from different sources as needed, but this is the one which we will start using immediately - it's got all the Propers for Sundays, Feasts, Commons, and Votive Masses; it's got the Solesmes Kyriale with all 18 settings, the six Credos, and the "ad libitum" chants; it has hymns for Benediction, and Marian anitphons, and other miscellaneous antiphons. It is small but readable, and so light weight that it almost feels as though it's not there, compared to our current setup, which has two binders per person of 650 letter size pages!

The icing on the cake, however, is that it has a hundred pages of simplified settings of the Graduals, Alleluias, and Tracts. These are usually the most difficult chants, and we only sing a few of them (relying on Rossini for the rest), so this section is wonderful.

There are only two drawbacks for us in this book, and they are only because of the status of the schola. One is that we sing Psalm verses with the Communion antiphons, so we will need to get those from another source (probably the book Communio by Richard Rice) and the other is that we are not quite ready to sing all the Offertories yet, so we will continue to use our copies of Rossini for that.

But for the amount of material, well presented, well printed, this book is fantastic!!!

I highly recommend for people who, like me, are new to chanting at Mass. Cheaper than a full Liber Usualis, but has everything you need for chanting during the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.

Also, if you're at a parish that does the ancient pre-1955 Holy Week, it has that!

I am in a schola at our Church which sings the parts for the Traditional Latin Mass. This book is functional for the needs of our schola. It has the necessary Propers without the bulkiness of the full Liber Brevior. Thank you. God bless.

The Liber Brevior, another successful publication available from the Church Music Association of America, is much easier to use than the cumbersome Liber Usualis. It has most of the main Sunday and feast propers and ordinaries, as well anthems and hymns in common use. I would recommend it for anyone who uses chant on a frequent basis.

I chose this product because our choir is going to use it. We like it because it is light and easy to hold and the print is easy to read. So far I have found nothing at all to complain about.
