Great Headpones, but I recommend the Koss KPH40!
    4 out of 5 stars
Great Headpones, but I recommend the Koss KPH40!
I enjoyed these Headphones! For those of you who have trouble with it pulling your hair, my remedy was to wrap painters tape (blue to match the highlights on the headphones) around the middle section of the headband. It also keeps the headband the perfect length so I didn't have to constantly adjust it every time I took it off. This DOES make it less portable for pocket carry, but I never used that anyway. The temple pads were giving me migraines so I ripped them off. Then I replaced the foam earpads with the YAXI ones. Now everything is great.---MY HUNT FOR THE BEST BUDGET HEAPHONES:(I use my headphones for 80's Rock, 90's Alternative, Oldies, Classical, and plenty of TV and Movies)-SHORT VERSION...BUY THE KOSS KPH40'S AND SOME YAXI PADS!LONG VERSION...FIRST I HAD THE PX-100-i's for like 10 years. Loved them, but the connector broke a few years back. THEN I got the PX-100-ii's. I didn't like it as much as the first iteration. Way too much Bass! And the bass bled like crazy. They sounded super muddy. But everything else sounded like my old px-100's. Then a few months ago, THOSE broke at the connector (I'm nice to my headphones, they get plugged into my computer and stay there, there's really no reason for those connectors to go faulty, just bad manufacturing). Then I found out that Sennheiser was no longer making ANY PX-100's anymore, so I had some research to do...NEXT WERE THE KOSS PORTAPROShttps://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00001P4ZH/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1-The sound is 'soft' for the mids and uppers, and a slightly boomy bass. Very easy-listening. The bass was a little too boomy for my taste, but it wasn't bad. The high's weren't sibilant, which I loved. I missed some clarity from my px-100's, but it was worth it. What I didn't like about it was that the bass bled into the mids, which made some things sound weird. Still, I liked them better than my original sennheiser PX-100-i's which is saying something. The PX-100-i's have highs that are harsh on my ears, too much sibilance. The Bass on the PX-100-i's can be a little to boomy also, but no bleeding. It had an accurate, clear sound I loved. But overall I considered the Portapro's a nice upgrade.KOSS KPH30ihttps://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B075FBRYM1/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1-But, I didn't like the bleeding bass of the Portapro's, so I kept hunting. I tried the Koss KPH30i's next. VERY nice. I consider them better than the Portapro's. Slightly more clarity in the highs and the bass didn't bleed. The high's were only a little more powerful than the Portapro's, pretty much had the same 'soft' sound quality I liked in the Portapro's. The bass was a little underwhelming. I could tell where the bass was meant to be, which was nice, but it wasn't boomy at all. Like HEARING the bass, but not FEELING it. At first I really appreciated that, especially for classical, but after a few days I kind of missed the bass punch of the Portapro's. The biggest problem with the KPH30i's were they were uncomfortable! The earpads are huge and they press on my ears hard. Its not just the compression strength causing it, its the flat earcups that press against the entire ear. I could only wear it for 10 min before taking them off. So I tried the Grado Ear Pad mod, put it around the earcups and it was MUCH better. Warning, do NOT remove the original foam of the headphones. They tear and you cant get them back on. I made that mistake and now my KPH30i's high's hurt my ears because there is nothing between my ear and the driver. I wished I would have kept the original foam on, and THEN put the Grado pads over them. Instead I had to use the paper towel mod and now the high's don't hurt my ears. The hole in the pad still make a tunnel effect and I feel like that creates a pressure chamber that hurts my ears over time. I DO love the silicone resting band on this set. With that and the Grado pads, these became a lot more comfy, but I still would have to take them off after a couple hours, from my ears over-heating and the firm pressure on the ears. That combined with the lack of bass punch, I decided to keep looking.KOSS KPH40https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09KZC94X1/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1-I had heard that the KPH40 was the sound 'sweet spot' between Portapro's and KPH30i's, and they were right! These are currently my favorite headphones, even more than my less-than-budget-friendly Sennheiser HD599's (see below). The KPH40's are my Goldilocks Headphones. The KPH40's sound profile are a LITTLE more V-shape than the Portapro's and the KPH30i's. A little more bass than the KPH30i's and a little more high's than the Portapro's. Perfect. The bass is just right, and very accurate. The mids are there, but not overpowering. The high's are clear but still have that 'soft', 'easy-listening' sound I enjoy from the Koss drivers. Honestly I don't think a lot of people will hear a difference between the 3 Koss headphones I tried, its very subtle. They all have the same basic sound. But the differences were enough for me to recommend the KPH40's over the others. The koss headphones I tried aren't as clear and accurate as my HD599's but I enjoy listening to music on them more. It's just more laid back while still being clear and accurate enough. It has a pleasant 'cloudiness' to the whole sound image. I think some people call this 'veiled'. That's a good description. It's just not as harsh on the ears, I could listen to them all day without pain or fatigue. I put the YAXI pads I bought for my Portapro's on them and they fit fine. Super comfy. It didn't really need it because Koss learned from the KPH30i's mistake and made these earcups small. They sit right on the ear where it needs to and it doesnt hurt. The headband is also metal instead of plastic, so you can adjust it to exactly the clamping force and shape that you want. At first, I found the metal headband too skinny, it felt like it was cutting into my scalp. It wasn't, It just felt that way. So I actually took the silicone band I loved from the KPH30i's and taped it to the inside of the metal head band. LOL, I'm not fancy. I bet you could tape some rolled up paper towel to the inside and get a similarly comfy effect. This mimics the all day comfort I always got from my PX-100's. I think any future iteration's should still keep the metal band, but maybe include the silicone comfort band from the KPH30i's, don't touch the drivers or earcups, they are great. I LOVE the ribbon style cable that doesn't tangle. I don't really need the "utility series" connector, especially when the utlity cables cost $45, so if removing that makes these headphones $30 instead of $40, please do so and make these headphones an even more ridiculous bargain!SENNHEISER HD599https://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD-599-Open-Headphone/dp/B01L1IICR2?ref_=ast_sto_dp&th=1-At $150, I almost didn't want to mention these as budget headphones, but for those looking to become Audiophiles, I think they are the cheapest Audiophile-quality option. Some recommend the Grado SR60's or SR80's, but I don't. They have zero bass, ear canal piercing highs, and are VERY uncomfortable to wear. The earcups are flat, high compression, and unyielding. I couldn't wear them for more than 3 minutes. The sound profile of those Grado's might be good for monitoring high's and mids, but not bass, so what's the point of them? Vocals and violins only? No thanks. The HD599's, on the other hand, have a very neutral profile with a SLIGHTLY elevated bass, perfect for monitoring, IMO. The bass is present, a little punchy, but not muddy or boomy at all. While the headphones were comfy on my ears, I found that it created weird air pressure differences in my ear canal. This became very fatiguing after an hour, even at the lowest possible volume to hear the music. Probably because of the bigger, more powerful drivers. I think they started to damage my ears. After a few weeks I couldnt wear them for more than 10 minutes without my ears hurting again. The only time any budget Koss driver did that was when I had the tunnel effect going on with the Grado Cushion Mod, and even then it was at a much lesser degree.---A NOTE ON AUDIOPHILIA...-But mostly I just recommend people don't become Audiophiles. It sucks. What a music-lover like me didn't understand was that Audiophiles don't listen to music, they monitor it. They don't absorb the entire composition, they nit-pick specific parts of it. This robs the listener of any enjoyment of the music. It kind of bother's me that they have stolen the title of "Audiophile". I think that belongs to music-lovers and music-makers. What we call "Audiophilia" should actually be called "Audiomonitoring". Calling it Audiophilia compels music-lovers like me to spend massive amounts of money on "better" headphones and audio setups to rob of us of any listening enjoyment we previously had with our $40 budget headphones, and rob our wallet while they are at it. I don't mean to insult or begrudge Audiophiles for a hobby they enjoy, I just don't like it when they are propped up as experts of the best sounding equipment. They aren't. They are experts for the best MONITORING equipment for sound engineers. If you enjoy music, I recommend you get a "consumer" headphone. I recommend you get the Koss KPH40.I like my KPH40's the best for listening to Music, TV, and Movies. Even over my Sennheiser HD599's. Its true that the HD599's have better clarity, but I enjoy music more with my KPH40's because I'm not hearing harshness or noises that the sound engineers never meant people to hear. Sometimes I felt like I was hearing TOO MUCH accuracy on the HD599's, like things the orchestra didn't want us to hear. I couldn't ENJOY my music because I was MONITORING it too much. I heard too much noise, not enough music. And I didn't have a CHOICE to enjoy the music, I HAD to monitor it. Audiophiles are nit-picky sound analysts, so take their hard-earned advice with that in mind.OK, A short message on Amp/DAC's. Don't bother.I have a Dragonfly Cobalt Amp/DAC. It costs $330. While it DOES make all my headphones sound better, it's practically negligable. MAYBE a 3-5% improvement in sound. Not really worth spending any kind of money on. The DAC on my computer is fine. Especially with the Koss budget headphones. It's recommended that you have an amp for heaphones that have an impedance of 50 ohms or higher. If its higher than 50 ohms you might want an amp just so the drivers are poperly driven, or it will sound real quiet. But test it first at full volume, you might not need it. If you do, there are Amp/DAC's in the $60 range that should do just fine. You definately don't need it with the KPH40's. So unless you can get it for free like I did (VERY nice friend), then I wouldn't bother with it.What about special cables? Not needed with the KPH40's alone. I had trouble with distortion running headphones from my amp using a cheap amazon 3.5mm extension cable, so I just got a USB extension cable instead and ran the headphones driectly from the amp. Problem solved. If your still having problems with distortion, there's guides online on how to make quality cables on the cheap. But you shouldn't need them. Please don't spend more than $20, the cost-to-sound improvement ratio is the worst here.OK, rant against the heaphone consumer industry over...and thank heaven for Koss!---So for normal people (99.9% of the population), I recommend you forget the expensive monitor stuff and get the KPH-40's for the $40. :DOther than the modifications I mentioned, you can also use the Kramer Mod to further fine tune the sound profile, but I don't think it's necessary with the KPH40's. Guides for the Kramer Mod can be found online. Here's the YAXI pads I used on the Portapro's and the KPH40'shttps://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MQVHX84/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1Here's the Grado Pads I used on the KPH30i'shttps://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00TGCDHL2/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1Here's some painters tape for the Portapro's. Since this review I have noticed that the Koss KPH40 headphones do tend to "bloom" in the upper-mid Bass range. What does that mean? There is a mildly loud reverberation when the Bass hits a certain frequency, and ONLY that frequency. As the sound gets lower the bloom goes away. For this reason I have gone back to my repaired Sennheiser PX-100 (originals) as my main headphone. But I still love these headphones!

I'm giving these headphones a five with their low price definitely being a factor in that decision. I'm sure everyone understands that scoring a thing is a relative sort of prospect. These are by no means the best kind of headphones you can buy, but they offer the very best sound you could ever expect from hardware that is under $30.

Really, it's kind of staggering how great these sound for this price. I'm no expert on the tech side of things regarding audio, but I can tell you the sound is crisp, the bass is low and impactful, and the highs are pleasingly lacking in screech and tinny-ness (that's how I'm going to word that; sorry... haha).

Koss doesn't have the best reputation in the world as far as consistent quality, but this model is one of their high points. Here's a breakdown to get right to the point:

      Pros:
--They just sound good. My eyes kind of went wide when I kicked these on through my iPhone (first tried out "We The People" from A Tribe Called Quest because of that great beat right off the bat and was not disappointed, obviously). As I said above: good highs, good lows.
--They are very comfortable. They have a "Comfort Zone" switch from low to high, the pads (which swivel!) are nicely -- well -- padded, and there's another buffer of foam that sits just above your ears to take some of the pressure off your ears as well.
--They are VERY light. Since they are simply headphones attached with a thin metal strip, they seem to weigh nothing at all, a huge bonus for long-term users.
--If you take them off to adjust them, they will probably not pull your hair, which is a common complaint I've seen in these reviews. Do not adjust them while on your head, and you'll likely be fine. I've never had a single hair-pull.
--They accommodate a very large head at maximum adjustment. My head is large enough to have it's own gravitational pull (Thanks, Mike Myers!), and these fit PERFECTLY.
--The cord is not very long, and for my tastes -- especially given these are being sold as PORTAble -- that's VERY appealing. There's nothing worse than doing dishes or cooking and getting your headphone cord stuck around a drawer knob, thus ripping the phones off your head and sending you into a rage that ends nations. The shorter cord mitigates that global tragedy.
      --I think they look cool!

      Con:
--Yes, just one con for me so far: they make my ears hot. However, this is more of a personal problem; most people I know do not have this problem, but if I put ANYTHING on my ears, they are red-hot within minutes. So, ignore this con if you're a normal human being and not approaching the surface temperature of the sun every few hours. If the pads can be traded out for nice leather ones or something, I am not aware of that although I have looked on Koss's website where the pads can be bought.

In short: If you need a spare pair of 'phones or even a single pair for most situations (probably not great for exercise, however; dunno), you really can't go wrong with these. Thumbs up from this fella!

I received a pair of PortaPro's a few days ago, and I'm impressed with the sound quality. This is not my first experience with the 60-ohm Koss drivers. That honor goes to the KPH30i, which I'm pleased with. That headphone has a warm and dark sound signature, and enough detail to satisfy most people, including some audiophiles. Many sources can sound a bit veiled, especially if you're coming from a studio headphone like the Koss Pro4S, Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro, AKG K240 or Sony MDR-7506. The KPH30i's little bit of detail prevents the sound from getting muddy. Overall, a pleasant, non-fatiguing sound.

The PortaPro on the other hand, has more treble detail and a bit of additional bass boost. Some people prefer the KPH30i or KSC75 over the PortaPro. I don't own the KSC75, so between the KPH30i and PortaPro, I prefer the PortaPro over the KPH30i given the extra treble detail. That extra treble detail improves clarity with many songs, pieces and film scores. Plus that extra bass boost allows genres like EDM, modern pop, Hip-Hop, Dubstep, etc to sound amazing. Sure, given these are on-ear open-back headphones, the subbass is rolled off, but the midbass, upper bass, and mids are very good. Treble performance is often pretty good for a headphone with a warm sound signature. No added harshness or sibilance. The treble can be soft and veiled with some audio sources, but like the KPH30i, perfectly acceptable in those scenarios. Soundstage is decent as is imaging. These headphones offer excellent good sound quality for the money.

The open-back design helps with sound quality, but means sound can leak in, and your music can leak out, unless you keep the volume down very low. These headphones are best suited for a quiet environment, like at home. Despite this, some people do use the PortaPro in public. I prefer closed-back headphones like the Koss Pro4S for going out specifically for its sound isolation and ability to listen to music at moderate volume without much leaking.

The design of these headphones is a clear throwback to the 1980's. That's because these headphones made their debut back in 1984. They were designed to fold up into a ball in order to be placed into a small bag or a pocket. And boy do they fold into a small ball, thanks to the bendable metal headband and the hook just above the earpads. The comfortZone feature helps to reduce the pressure the earcups place on the head. Setting it to Light really makes these headphones comfortable. They do have a thin cable, but it feels sturdy enough to not feel like its going to break at any moment. Back in 1984, these were the best-sounding portable headphones you could buy. In fact, the PortaPro's drivers have been used in a multitude of Koss headphones over the years, some of which are still in production today (KSC75, KTXPRO1, UR40, SportaPro, KPH30i, and the new KPH40).

The main disadvantages is the fact that you have to adjust the headphones each time you put them on your head. Same goes for setting the comfortZone to Light if you prefer that setting over Firm. Some people have had their hair get caught in between the headband or the adjustment mechanisms, but that hasn't happened to me yet. Overall, these issues are minor and don't detract from the overall rating I'm giving these headphones. Your experience may vary, however.

These headphones deserve a 5-star rating. They've been around since 1984, and hold up very well in December 2021. I'd recommend them to anyone seeking decent sound quality on a fairly tight budget and don't mind using open-back headphones.

I already own 2 Bose headphones. With the 1st one, the right side died. The 2nd one still works but it had been feeling quite cumbersome, bulky & hot/sweaty to use specially in Southeast Asia.

So I got this on a whim for the lightness, hip aesthetic, & quality of sound. Soon as i began using it it was "Where has this been all my life" moment. This is worth every penny. It feels like I'm not wearing headphones, the sound is SPECTACULAR, and the way it folds up to fit in the palm of my hand is GENIUS.

I am paying it forward by doing this review bec the reviews I read about this were super helpful. This is also me saying thank you to all who did.

Cannot recommend this enough (specially if it is on sale!).

THANK YOU, KOSS, FOR A PHENOMENAL PRODUCT.

Alright so I got them on a pretty neat discount. Back then I wasn't willing to pay the full price, and now that I have one I'm still not convinced on the 50+ cad price. Yeah sure it's wonderful pricing for such a great sounding headphone, but did you ever consider the consequence of taking such a plunge? I mean go on the internet and you'll either find raving reviews saying these are the best in class, or immeasurable disappointment who foolishly set too high of an expectation to get what they expected: Not good enough.

When you buy one of these as a hobbyist, you look back at your audio, wondering where you've gone wrong. It's not quite audiophile enough to replace my more expensive, albeit larger sets of headphones, but it's not quite bassy enough to satisfy my basshead beast that's leaching off my life essence (curse you Sony Extrabass and your extra-bassyness that not even the bass the fish can sate my evergrowing lust for extra bass). I'd compare the bass level to what sony throws out on their non-Xtra-Bass lines of headphones.

There's enough width to sound to almost pretend I'm in the place of recording... almost. It just lacks that little bit of something that ruins the immersion. Yeah sure it's wide, but what's the point if you're fully aware that what you're listening to is only a sample of what the audiophile world has in store for you? The audio listening hobby quickly shifts from a minor purchase here and there to irresponsible spending in a blink of an eye... and before you know it you've created a black hole in your wallet where your hund-o's used to live.

That's what this is, unsatisfying in any way you look at it, if you've gotten a glimpse of what it could've been with a few more tens, hund-o's, or grandies to spend.

Build quality is competent, but I wish the clamping force wasn't so hard, and the foam that's supposed to sit on the head to alleviate the problem doesn't reach my big, dumb head.

Comfort is there, but not enough. The furthest settings for the "comfortZone" (which adjusts how much pressure the earpads assert on your poor ears) is just not light enough for my sensitive ears. I don't think I can spend a whole day wearing these without my ears getting sore. Good news for glasses wearers though (at least some of them), the pressure is put on the antitragus and the tragus, so though you'll get discomfort (or at least itchiness) in those middle outer parts of your ears, your glasses frame will likely not dig into your skull! But of course your mileage may vary.

The cable is not noisy at all, though I don't think that matters much considering that these are open back, and you'll definitely hear the cable whack around furniture due to careless usage.

The audio quality, though really good for the price, short of a miracle that everyone claims it to be, and a bit too bassy for ex-bassheads (and not bassy enough for the bassheads). It's a pretty warm sound, but the mids and highs are present enough to make it seem like it just has that extra bass on top of a balanced sound.

Sure the driver units can be popped off and attached to other attachments (I've actually gone and put them on a KSC75 earhook), and the foam pad can be replaced with the much more comfortable and better sounding YAXI earpads... however I'm reviewing the product as it's own... and without any accessories (except a "protein leather" egg bag), this product is not good enough for all the praise everyone's screaming out...

But that's what it is. Disappointment if and ONLY IF you set your expectations stupidly high based on reviews bowing down before its presence. If you ignore all the fans (somehow) and just buy the product expecting nothing but a 50$-sounding headphones, prepare to have your socks blown off to next sunday cuz this set of headphones is the best retro-style good-sounding headphones for the money!

When you buy this, don't expect a giant-killer; Be humble, and you'll get more than you've bargained for. If not, at least these do well as conversation starters and/or room decoration.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for price, skewed towards bass
Reviewed in Canada on May 27, 2022

These are fantastic for the price, especially as a gateway into the audiophile realm. Pound for pound they stack up equally with headphones more than twice the price, they punch way above their weight. Open backed so while you can hear everything around you and bleed sound, the sound quality itself and soundstage is likely going to blow most people's minds, especially anyone who hasn't used expensive high end headphones before. These are fairly bass skewed if that's your bag, if you prefer a more neutral mid based sound I recommend the kph-30i. Build quality feels sort of cheap and I think that's how they managed to sound so good at such a low price. The cables to the earphones themselves are very thin and feel flimsy. I keep them in the nice little carrying case they come in and use them solely at home, so far so good. The lifetime warranty however adds a feeling of security against the cheaper build and is nice to see. They are strange looking and will turn heads, not in a positive sense, but that design comes with some benefits. They are extremely light and comfortable, that alone almost cancels out the ugly duckling vibe.

Long story short these offer sound that punches way above their weight and will likely be the best sounding headphones that someone who has always used cheaper headphones will ever hear. The open backed design gives a real soundstage that makes the music sound likes it's coming from all around you. These come with a high recommendation from me!

5.0 out of 5 stars Compact maar krachtige headphone
Reviewed in the Netherlands on November 5, 2024

Aanbevolen.
