San Francisco: Portrait of a City / Portrat einer Stadt / Portrait d'une ville Hardcover – March 4, 2022
Purchase options and add-ons
Starting with an early picture of a gang of badass gold prospectors who put this beautiful Northern California city on the map, this ambitious and immersive photographic history of San Francisco takes a winding tour through the city from the mid–nineteenth century to the present day.
Enjoy eye-catching views of the city’s most enduring landmarks and symbols: the Golden Gate Bridge, Chinatown, the picturesque trams that wind up and down the famously steep hills, the popular waterfront, its beautiful bay, and its spectacular cityscapes and vistas. San Francisco’s counterculture movements that shaped our collective consciousness are also featured prominently: the beats of North Beach, the hippies of Haight-Ashbury, the gay communities of Castro, and the Black Panthers of neighboring Oakland. Some of the city’s most famous residents also make appearances: Robin Williams, The Grateful Dead, Angela Davis, Janis Joplin, Sylvester, and Allen Ginsberg, among others.
This book features hundreds of newly found images from dozens of archives including museums, universities, libraries, galleries, private collections, and historical societies, from 19th-century daguerreotypes to mid-century Kodachromes to 21st-century digital pictures. Master photographers include, among others: Stephen Shore, Imogen Cunningham, Fred Lyon, Steve Schapiro, Minor White, Dorothea Lange, Albert Watson, Robert Frank, Garry Winogrand, William Claxton, Fred Herzog, Ansel Adams, Jim Marshall, and many local shooters. Also includes introductory essays and captions by Bay Area–based author Richie Unterberger and a “Best of San Francisco” books, music, and movies section and biographies of the photographers. Tony Bennett famously sang, “I left my heart in San Francisco,” and this meticulously researched and conceived portrait will equally inspire and make you fall in love with the spirit of the City by the Bay.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 24, 2022I had been really excited about this book as San Francisco and photography are a real passion. You get some of the classics from the likes of Fred Lyon and to learn some other names that were not so prominent (at least to me).
While there are no recent photos of the city, this book is more about the history of the city through the lens of very talented photographers, some of which are anonymous but I was glad to see them published anyway.
This is a hefty book at over 8 pounds but is also beautifully bound with nice big and popping photos, I'm not sure if it comes in other sizes but would recommend this one for that alone. There's also a lot of citations of popular events and people who have touched the city in one way or another. It does come in multiple languages which adds to the heft but not enough to detract from it all.
If you're a fan of San Francisco history and photography, this is the book for you.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 4, 2024Bought this fory parents who grew up in the city in the 50s. This book does a great job showcasing what made SF great.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 14, 2024Perfect gift for someone who has fallen in love with the gorgeous city of San Francisco!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 2, 2023For anyone who grew up in the bay area after WWII this will bring on the memories.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 4, 2022This is a beautiful book with photos I've never seen before. I collect 60's posters and books, but this truly outstanding. Can't wait to dive in.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 1, 2023This book was a gift and they loved it
- Reviewed in the United States on December 31, 2022Christmas presents
- Reviewed in the United States on August 3, 2022Some great photos and well-written. But… No picture of Ghirardelli Square? Or Beach Blanket Babylon? Or Pier 39? Seriously? A bit too PC with a lot of people photos and not enough of the actual city. But still worth the price.

S.F. mon amour.
Sehr informativ und detailliert.
Schrift zu klein, ermüdend.
Kenne die Stadt per Pedes und Cable Car, all ober.
Schönste Stadt der Welt, zusammen mit Hamburg und Sydney.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sehr umfangreiches, gut bebildertes Werk!
Das Buch ist auf jeden Fall sehr zu empfehlen und beeindruckt.
Es ist umfangreich bebildert und die Texte sind informativ.
Allerdings ist es auch ein echt schwerer „Brocken“.
