Married for convenience and hastily separated, a couple on the brink of divorce fall in love in this Regency romance from a New York Times bestseller.

Hell hath no fury like a bride scorned!

Highborn country heiress Mallory Edwards was dutifully fulfilling family obligations when she exchanged marriage vows with a dashing gentleman she barely knew. But the charming beast abandoned her on their wedding night. Years later—facing prison because of her husband's debts—she has finally found the blackguard, John Barron, again. And she's not leaving until the faithless rogue grants her a divorce!

John is enchanted by this delightful hellion who causes a scene at his London soirée. Could this be the forgotten rural miss whom his father once forced him to wed? Now that Mallory's reentered his life, John desperately wants her to stay—and not merely to help him snare the criminal who is ruining them both. But winning her hardened heart will take more than sweet words and sensuous kisses—he will have to become the caring, thoughtful husband who is truly worthy of her passion and her love.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

At the start of every chapter in this charming Regency title are lines from English folk songs. And like these songs, the romance between Mallory Edwards and John Barron is at times quaint, humorous, ironic, touching, and heroic. Mallory's family has always owned Craige Castle, so when financial circumstances require that Mallory marry to keep the Castle in the family, she does so out of duty. Young and inexperienced, she is willing to take her mother's advice about relationships. When her new husband abandons her on their wedding night she makes peace with her new and lonely life until John's debts force Mallory and her mother out of their family home. Seven years after her wedding night, Mallory goes in search of her husband, and finds he has much more to offer than financial stability.

Not the usual expectations, for sure. I believed I wouldn't like John very much when Mallory first meets up with him seven years after they were married. He came across as a typical jackass. But with each chapter, he redeemed himself. Mallory was a little trickier. I lost ked her spirit and her independence but she also acted slow gently privileged at times.
The story line was quite good, overall.

Please read my previous reviews as you'll quickly see that I am not overly free with praise. As of yesterday, I have broken a three month pledge to not read romance novels, and this was one of the first books I picked up. Once I picked it up, I did not stop reading until I had finished. This was an incredibly enjoyable book with an enjoyable storyline and characters.

I genuinely liked the hero and heroine. Each of them offered a complexity and depth to their characterization that at the end of the book, I truly felt like they were a couple deeply in love. I'm usually not one to gush over a hero who has been involved in extramarital affairs, but for some reason, I actually feel as though I believe the hero when he says he just never felt married to the heroine. I know that may seem strange, but once you read the book, hopefully it will make sense for you.

John and Mallory will go down as probably one of my favorite couples. Mallory is intelligent, confident in her status but unsure of her social skills, while John seems to be able to blend into any group regardless of whether they are a royal set or common country folk. He's equally intelligent, good looking, and obviously smitten. He wasn't a hero that set out to manipulate Mallory to his whim; he actually set out to become her friend and then her lover. And, I should admit that I have a soft spot for stories that have the man realizing and expressing his love before the woman does. Mallory wasn't a young and naive girl being exploited by the domineering presence of the male; in fact, I think Mallory scored more bickering points in their little disagreements. I loved her spunk.

A truly recommendable book, dear readers!

I have enjoyed this book. It has a different plot than all of the others. I like the leading male character better than the female character but She isn't as much of a whiner by the end of the book. I enjoyed it and hope you do also.

A mediocre read. The beginning was promising but the rest did not live up to it. I would not read it again.

Mallory Edwards married John Barron when she was sixteen. Neither wanted to marry but were forced into the marriage for security for Mallory and by his father on John's part. John leaves Mallory, without consummating the marriage, on their wedding night. Fast forward seven years, their paths cross again when she shows up at a soiree of his latest mistress. John is no longer a young man, pushed around by his father and Mallory is no longer his teenage bride. They literally run away from the soiree due to John's crooked uncle Louis embezzling John's funds and leaving him broke and to a mob of people to whom he owes money. Mallory has lost her home due to not receiving help from her absent husband and she wants a divorce so she can marry an old friend. During their running and hiding, John decides that he will not give Mallory her divorce, but instead lays siege to win her back. Mallory is a tough woman though and she puts John through misery in more than one way.

In order to keep her home, Lady Mallory has been forced to wed a distant relative at the age of seventeen. Even John Barron, (the groom), who's almost twenty, had no idea he'd be married so young. But one their wedding night, her mother drugs Mallory to help settle her nerves. When she wakes in the morning, she believes John slept with her, but she cannot remember it. John disappears for seven years, leaving his wife behind, believing his uncle would handle his business affairs in his absence. He left his bride, still a virgin, and headed out to war, returning and seeking solace with his mistress. But in those seven years, life has been hard for Mallory. She'd hoped her husband would return, but when she loses her home, she seeks him out to get a divorce, so she can marry another. She finds him with his mistress and is distraught. When John learns the truth, he vows to stand by his wife and get her the home back. Over time, they fall in love with each other, but when Mallory discovers she's still a virgin, she no longer trusts John and throws him out. John is determined to set things right and win back the woman he loves.

Overall, the book was OK. It started well, but the plot seemed to stagger in the middle and towards the end. Some of the banter exchanged between Mallory and John is a little humourous, but it started to wear thin when it went on. In the beginning, John is a selfish character, and I tried to empathise with him when we learn why he's kept himself at a distance from his wife, but I just couldn't.
